What views do the people of Singapore have for Japan, considering their messy past with the country?

It’s cosier than you’d think it’d be. We’re right in the midst of a year-long celebration of 50 years of bilateral ties with Japan with the SJ50 campaign, so that should tell you something.

Sure, the Occupation is still a sore point for the elder generation, but otherwise, our current Government is on very friendly terms with Japan. We’ve built strong economic political, and even cultural ties with the Japanese, based on regular exchanges, strong economic links and a common strategic outlook in East Asia. Both Singapore and Japan are the second-largest foreign direct investors in each others' countries, and there’s a significant population of Japanese expatriates here.

As for the man on the street, it’s certainly not an understatement to say that Singaporeans - younger ones especially - love Japan. Millions of Singaporeans visit Japan annually, and Singaporeans love Japanese popular culture, whether its cuisine, manga or anime. J-pop might have taken a hit from K-pop, but there’s still a relatively strong following here thanks to the popularity of the Anisong genre.
