Kodansha's mistranslations regarding RenMei (Mini-Masterpost)
1.) ❌Incorrect: Ren calls Jeanne by her first name
✅ Correct: Ren refers Jeanne as "Meiden" in the Original Shaman King Japanese manga
When Ren later becomes older and gets together with Jeanne, he stops calling her Meiden and calls her by her first name, Jeanne. This is present in the original Japanese manga so therefore, it's also present in English.
2.) ❌Incorrect: Ren calls Jeanne a witch
✅ Correct: Ren never called Jeanne any rude names in the Original Japanese Shaman King manga
Japanese raw text:
それより――問題はどうやってオレが死ぬかだ!! 眠れる森の美女だと!一体なんの話をしている!!!!
Accurate English translation:
More importantly—the real question is how I’m going to die!! Sleeping Beauty!? What on earth are you talking about!!
3.)❌Incorrect: After Men was born, Jeanne cuts her hair; Ren and Jeanne got married after their son was born
✅ Correct: Jeanne finds out she is pregnant and then cuts her hair; Ren and Jeanne gets married before their son was born
Japanese raw text:
出会った頃は・・・普段からリボンやフリルがヒラヒラした服ばかり着ていて お前を授かった途端 かみ とたんその髪をバッサリ切って飾り気のない服ばかり着るようになったんだ 腕に・・・抱いたお前の顔に・・・かみ ふく 髪や服がかかってはいけないと・・・・・・
Accurate English translation:
When we first met… she used to wear nothing but clothes with fluttering ribbons and frills. But the moment she became pregnant with you, she cut her hair short and started wearing only plain clothes. She didn’t want her hair or clothes to get in the way of your face when she held you in her arms…
So basically the events in order leading to their wedding and Men's birth:
Ren and Jeanne conceived Men roughly somewhere in December 2006
Jeanne later finds out she’s pregnant somewhere in early 2007 and cuts her hair
Ren and Jeanne gets married- Jeanne's hair was short at the wedding
Months later in September 13 2007, Men is born
Kodansha mistranslated this unfortunately which being the reason why it caused so many confusion among fans. It’s always best to check the Japanese raw first beforehand since not all official English translations regarding Shaman King and Kodansha may not always be correct 100% of the time. DeepL is your best friend and I highly recommend relying on it since it has accurate translations (On the other hand, Google Translate, Bing or Yandex aren't advanced enough to accurately translate things properly so I highly don't recommend using any of those)
