Anna Ancher (Aug. 18, 1859 - 1935) was one of the best of the Skagen Painters, and the only native of the town (She was the daughter of the local hotelier, Brøndum). She married Michael Ancher when she was 21, and in winters they lived in Copenhagen, where Anna studied under Vilhelm Kyhn (since women were not allowed access to the Royal Academy...)

Her art is informed by her study of the Dutch 17th C. masters, and an Impressionist approach to light and color. Here is one of her finest interiors:

P.S. Krøyer (July 23, 1851 - 1909) was one of the circle of painters and Bohemians known as Skagensmalerne/The Skagen Painters. His canvases fetch high prices in auctions worldwide, and he is a prime representative of Danish impressionism.

Here is his portrait of Frederikke Tuxen (née Treschow), which was painted in 1882 and given as a wedding present to Laurits and Frederikke Tuxen in 1901. The painting is oil on panel and was sold by Christie’s in 2011 for GBP 27,500...

Thorvald Niss (May 7, 1842 - 1905) was a Danish landscape and marine painter, who became part of the Skagen artists’ colony, and had his portrait painted by P.S. Krøyer.

Niss was the son of a house painter, and as a young man worked as a decorator for the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain factory. When Otto Bache took him on as his pupil, Niss made great leaps forward in technique and sensibility. He went to the Academy and traveled abroad quite extensively before embracing the Bohemian life in Skagen.

Unfortunately he had a nervous disposition, had a breakdown from which he never recovered, and died before his time…

Viggo Johansen (Jan. 3, 1851 - 1935) was a Danish landscape, portrait and genre painter. He frequented Skagen in the summertime, like so many other Danish artists, but also traveled widely abroad. However, almost all his art shows Danish landscapes, people and customs.

Here is a double (self)portrait of him and his wife, Martha from 1898.

Laurits Tuxen (Dec. 9, 1853 - 1927) was a Danish painter, sculptor and professor at the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen. He is inextricably associated with Skagen and helped found the Art Museum up there.

He painted in many genres. Originally he desired to be a marine painter, and he does do a good “Danish Turner”, but his talent was great enough to do portraits, history painting, landscapes and genre-type canvases of the locals.

Bohemian author and painter Holger Drachmann was born Oct. 9, 1846 - 1908. Associated with Skagen since 1872, Drachmann chose to be interred up there after his death. His painter colleague P.S. Krøyer designed his vault…

Drachmann was ever prolific - in matters literary, artistic and esp. the area of muses. As an intellectual he was central to the so-called ‘Modern Break-through’ in Danish thinking (1870-1890) along with Brandes and many others…
