Something something folly of man
A lot of people complained about Godzilla x Kong completely losing its sense of scale during the zero gravity fight, but I’m almost certain that this is an intentional choice. The movie does something really clever with the scale of the monsters here, and I really love it. It’s actually my favorite part of the movie.
I do agree that the sense of scale gets lost during this fight. There aren’t many points of reference to help the audience grasp the relative size of the monsters, and to make it worse, they are all literally flying through the air.
The kaiju are literally weightless, and most of the shots aren’t done in a way that conveys size. These action shots are framed less like a kaiju movie, and more like a regular sized action flick.
All of this subconsciously makes the audience forget just how big the Titans are, but in the middle of this fight, The Skar King makes it through the portal to Rio De Janeiro. Immediately we get this shot where he looks down on the humans at the beach, and we are suddenly very aware of how big he is.
The size and scale of the Skar King is shocking in this moment, and it really adds to the sense of danger. We went from seeing giant lizards and apes fighting in zero gravity to suddenly understanding just how big the Skar King is and how much damage he can do.
GxK makes the us forget how big the kaiju are in a kaiju movie, and then suddenly and jarringly reminded us. It’s a super effective way to raise the stakes for the last fight, and add a sense of urgency to the finale. I understand that this didn’t land for everyone (and I think that’s super valid), but it’s pretty much my favorite part of the whole movie.
Godzilla x Kong kaiju chilling and eating :3
