The skeletal memory method

Here’s a relatively easy way to improve drawing from memory. Method under the cut

Step one: find a reference and draw a “skeleton” from it, to get an idea of the pose. You could actually use this site which generates skeletons for you, but it’s best to start with a photo ref at first. I used this ref. 

Step two: Without looking at the original ref, finish the drawing. It can be a simple fleshing out or you could finish the whole drawing. I usually do five fleshed out figures, but here is two for an example:

don’t be afraid to modify the pose when you draw--that’s the whole point :D 

The point of this exercise is to improve confidence and practise drawing constructively. Don’t worry if your first attempts aren’t beautiful, this is a hard exercise. 

I don’t have any examples of when I started using this technique since I did it on paper.
