So I’m gonna reread the Skinjacker series by Neal Shusterman.
If you haven’t read Everlost, Everwild, and Everfound, you should.
It’s this series about what happened to kids and teens when they die but their spirits don’t make it to the end of the tunnel. Their spirits get stuck on earth, and they wander around getting into all sorts of shenanigans. Some of the kids have special abilities that allow them to manipulate the living world.
The world building in this series is off the charts. It’s so creative. Based on the premise you’d think it’s pretty depressing and dark. Don’t get me wrong. It gets really dark at times. Sometimes I’m like “oh my gosh, this is in a kid’s book???” But it’s actually really funny too. And so thought provoking.
It’s been a few years since I’ve read the series, but even now, when people ask for book recommendations I mention this series. It’s everything I like about fiction, fantasy, and storytelling. It passes the Larryboy test (“I laughed. I cried. It moved me, Bob”).
Go read The Skinjackers series.
