“Hunters & Collectors” is day 17 of #edgarandrolandsfebvinylchallenge by @harma808 — Here’s one for the original record collectors, a truly bizarre set of city folk who obsessed over and fetishized prewar country blues to such a degree that they hunted down records of which only a single copy remains and even went and found some of the original bluesmen themselves to bring out of retirement. For a great look into these strange collectors, I highly recommend the book on the left, Do Not Sell at Any Price by Amanda Petrusich. Today’s #superfriendssunday is the Summertime Blues (cue The Who covering Eddie Cochran)... our favorite blues! If you’ve known me long enough, you know I’m a sucker for prewar country blues. Gimme transfers of scratchy 78’s I have no chance of owning because there’s only one known copy. So for today’s theme I picked my 80’s Yazoo pressing of the complete 1931 Skip James. Skip James is a seminal artist, famous for a haunting vocal style and odd, dissonant guitar tunings. His most famous song is Devil Got My Woman Blues, and my favorite is Hard Time Killing Floor Blues, which was covered (faithfully) on the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack. And Yazoo is an incredible institution: in the 60’s they started putting out archival compilations of these incredibly rare records that obsessives had been hoarding, bringing an unusual and inaccessible genre into the light and spreading the influence of these great artists into the nascent rock n roll scene. And they’re still going today, putting out public domain compilations without much regard to commercial potential. It’s a record label of love and passion and extreme, next-level dorkiness.
