A very unusual love token from a Sailor to his beloved. 19th century
This here, is a skirt lifter, in that case with a folded anchor, that the lady wore on her chatelaine (a metal attachment on her skirt, on which many small useful things hung, like watches, scissors and so on). If the street was very dirty, she could use it to lift her skirt at the hem and attach the lifter back on her chatelaine again so that the skirt did not get dirty. The early examples appeared from 1846 onwards, but with the advent of very long skirts and their bustles, such a skirt lifter was very necessary and reached its peak between the 1860s and 1880s.
