Skull Tower is a stone structure embedded with human skulls. It is located in Niš, Serbia. It was constructed after the Battle of Cegar in 1809. It was made from the skulls of fallen of Serbian rebels who chose to commit suicide as the Ottomans were approaching as opposed to being captured and impaled.

The Skull Tower

The Skull Tower is a tower composed largely of human skulls located in the city of Niš, Serbia. During the 1809 Battle of Čegar, fought during the First Serbian Uprising, Serbian revolutionaries under Stevan Sinđelić were attacked by Turkish forces on Čegar Hill, near Niš. Rather than be captured by the Turks and impaled, Sinđelić fired his pistol into a powder magazine, killing himself and all Serbian rebels and Turkish soldiers in the vicinity. Afterward, Hurshid Pasha, the Turkish vizier of Niš, ordered that a tower be made from the skulls of the killed Serbian revolutionaries. The tower is 10 feet (3.0 m) high, and originally contained 952 skulls embedded on four sides in fourteen rows.

The Skull Tower

The Skull Tower (Ćele Kula), in Niš, Serbia was built in 1809 by the Ottoman general Hurshi Pasha during the First Serbian Uprising against the Empire (1804-1813). Rather than admit defeat, the rebels blew up a fully stocked gun powder room, which not only finished them off but also took a number of Turkish soldiers out as well. 

In retribution, Pasha had the heads removed from the dead bodies of the rebels then built a 15 foot high, 13 foot wide tower made up of 952 of their skulls.
