alumni apprehended sixty-two of the world’s most dangerous supervillains; thwarted twenty-seven alien invasions and rid the nation’s pre-schools of peanut dust. so, of course, faculty and parents alike found it a tough pill to swallow: powerless students and aliens? the horror!
udyati’s long since gotten used to it, though. sure, it stings, but people always have something to complain about: her status as a hybrid, the fact that she’s not the best at mad science. things like that.
“hey,” she says as she pats the seat next to her, “over here.” udyati beams at kate, momentarily forgetting that this is her worst subject and that soon, kate will be subjected to this, too. “you’re the girl with the arrows, right? like katniss everdeen, but, you know, cooler.”

"it's not like the adults were much help when it came to royal pain. in fact, i'd argue that they only made it worse. at this point, you're better off stepping aside and letting zach, magenta, ethan, layla, will, warren and freeze girl handle it."

officer kwon yoojin hails from seoul, south korea, where there is a prominent super community too, udyati is sure. she's here with park jinsu, a detective. the younger of the two had heard mister boy whisper to professor medulla before they rounded a corner and vanished into the teacher's lounge: something about a wicked serial killer.
and though officer kwon might be twenty-seven, about as old as one of the many new t.a.'s, and comes with a glowing recommendation by principal powers herself, it is clear that udyati looks at her with suspicion due to her profession.
the reason for this is a long story that no one has time for. instead she asks a question that has been on her mind ever since this conversation began.

of course they were picked to be the villains. of-freaking-course. stupid coach boomer. ugh. but hey! at least they won the round! and, see, udyati’s right! luka’s not that bad! in fact, she’s decided that she rather likes luka’s brusque way of being.
what she didn’t like was getting boxed in, but alas. there’s not much udyati could’ve done about that, even if she wanted to. “thank you,” she murmured quietly. “you too.” a beat, and then: “no, seriously, i mean it. you have more power than you know. and i think it’s good. i think it suits you. and i know that mister medulla had that whole spiel about time either healing us or killing us, but i don’t think they get to make that distinction. we’re not villains or sidekicks or heroes because white men in charge say so or see us that way.”
they won the hero round, too. so what does that say about the aforementioned assumptions?
“we decide what we are, when we are. so, um, listen, it’s gonna be rough couple of years. but we came this far. i’m not ready to quit. are you?”
