I was having a general thought tangent recently about gender & especially women in Skyjacks, and I’ve been ruminating in Margaret in particular since then.

We all know the trope/concept of women (particularly women dying) as motivation for men in stories. Basic action movie shit, it’s all “spur the man into action by killing the wife/girlfriend/daughter.” The more I think about Margaret (and William) the more I think James really flipped that trope upside down. Margaret dying basically becomes anti-motivation. Instead of losing Margaret and going “great, now I’ll kill the Mariner/the Forest Queen/ Whomever,” William rejects the story. He spends almost 200 years rejecting the story, refusing to engage with the story he’s meant to be a part of. He becomes part of a new story with the Uhuru and Gable and Jonnit. When he meets Margaret again, Travis isn’t forced into change, this woman isn’t sacrificing herself to fix his problems. She is giving him the opportunity to choose his story.

Basically I have a great deal of appreciation for James & the characterization of Margaret throughout Skyjacks & I need to catch up on couriers call for more Margaret.
