Word Count: 324
“You’re lucky,” Colrina said as she pulled the needle through an inflamed patch of Brynjolf’s skin. “The blade wasn’t poisoned.”
Brynjolf winced, then rolled his eyes. “Doesn’t feel that way, Lass,” he hissed through gritted teeth. “I don’t think luck was on my side tonight.”
“I guess you’re in the wrong line of work, then.” Colrina couldn’t help the small smirk that graced her lips as she continued stitching up Brynolf’s wound. “What were you thinking, going to Maven directly? You know she hates being cut out of a deal.”
A sigh, low and heavy, reached her ears, and she stopped working long enough to glance at Brynjolf’s face. His eyes were shut in resignation and pain, but what stood out the most was the way he lowered his head in shame. Briefly, Colrina considered backtracking. She didn’t want to make Brynjolf feel worse than he already did. But before she could even open her mouth, he sighed again.
“I don’t know.” Brynjolf rarely admitted when he was in the wrong, but to Colrina, it seemed like there was no escaping it this time. “I thought... since the Guild’s back on its feet again and our debt to her is paid off, Maven would be... more open to the idea.”
Colrina went back to her needlework. “And what did she say?”
“‘No one walks away from me,’” Brynjolf quoted with another eye-roll. “Then she had Maul rough me up a little.” He shook his head. “Steel cuts deep.”
As she finished stitching the wound, Colrina found herself thanking Nocturnal that steel, this time, hadn’t cut too deep. Dipping her bloody hands in the wash basin next to her, she rolled her shoulders back and gave Brynjolf the lightest tap on the shoulder.
“Wound’s patched. Try not to move your arm too much for the next few days. And for Divines’ sake, drink the healing potions.”
Brynjolf gave her a small grin. “No promises, Lass.”
