In the Dark

Their mother leaves at night, tucks them into bed with their baby brother in a sling around her chest, whispering, "When you wake up, Aunt Toph will have had her new baby." 

Kya pretends to sleep, her stomach alight with the anxious warmth the thought of another baby brings - will more nights end like this, a house with the shuffle of acolyte footsteps like leaves drifting across pavement, while Mom leaves like Dad, called to more important things. Bumi doesn't have her problem of worry and starts snoring, accustomed to pushing past the distance that comes between them and their parents.

Kya floats on waves of sleep. She rolls onto her side, stiff with restlessness, looking at her brother sprawled out on the cot across from her. The moonlight floods the world and in the silence, Kya and Bumi are the only people floating within it, aching for morning where at leas their mother will return.

Kya's heartbeat bounds to her throat when their father opens the door silently; the world in a man who presents himself quietly to his children. She shuts her eyes, pretending to sleep, expecting the warmth of his hand on her back and a scratchy kiss at her temple before he slips away again like a dream. It wouldn't be the first time.

Instead, she watches through her eyelashes as he says goodnight to Bumi, noticing the blackened singe on the dull yellow sleeve that hangs from his arm.

She shuts her eyes again when he turns. The thin mattress sinks as her father sits on the edge of her bed, his hand smoothing out her rough hair, stiffened with saltwater. She hears him sniff, and she smells smoke and fire.

He is heavy when he falls into the bed, seething with bitten pain as he eases against Kya's back. She has never known him like this, the reality of her father being vulnerable formed only of sound, scent, and touch. Dad is swaths of sunlight robes, eyes like winking yuans in the fountains in the city, and faded blue skin - nothing known of the man beneath what she can see. In the dark, there is an iron-heavy sadness.

She can only think to roll over, and curl tightly to his chest. Her father is home, and this is enough - Kya sleeps.

i would remake swimming anime and it would be girls with awesome muscles and it would be super intense and competitive and they would play water polo in the off-season and have lots of bruises and all the boys would be jealous

or i'd make a historical fantasy epic a la fushigi yuugi or the like but with less "girl chosen special from the future!!!! falls in love w many hot boys!!!!" and more angry rising from hardships and nothing with plenty of blood of her enemies

i know there's been so much dumber but my thirteen-year-old sister told me "mako is so brooding" and then followed it up with "idk i haven't watched lok in a while my friends who have tumblr told me that's what they think" (she's not allowed to have tumblr herself) she then told me a later day that the new doctor is "too old" so i think we're done here

my physical strength

also i have really good conversational skills and leadership ability

i read all the time and was obsessed with harry potter

who am i kidding though that hasn't changed i just have so much better social skills

oh...... much ado about nothing is pretty fun, but "the compleat wrks of wllm shkspr abridged" takes the cake (IT COUNTS)

when edward ate his baby out of bella's stomach

sorry but harry potter and the sorcerer's stone will probably always be my favorite book for what it means to me the whole thing i can't choose
