Have you ever wondered what happens after wizards retire?

That’s the premise of Slayers of Old by Jim C. Hines—a fantasy that is being marketed as Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets The Golden Girls. That alone intrigued me to read this book.

The story follows three former world-saving heroes who now run a cozy little bookstore out of their house in Salem.

Jenny used to hunt monsters for the goddess Artemis. Annette is a succubus and former private investigator. And Temple is one of the most powerful wizards in the world.

They’re all supposedly retired… until one night a mysterious supernatural creature shows up at their door, injured—and that’s when things start to spiral. Suddenly their quiet bookstore life turns into a mystery involving the supernatural underground, dangerous enemies, and a plot that could threaten the entire town—and maybe the world.

I loved this book. Magical bookstores are one of my favorite fantasy tropes, and the characters here are fantastic. Each of them has their own backstory and emotional scars, and the relationships between them really make the story work. Plus there’s a great twist around chapter ten that pulled me even deeper into the story.

If you enjoy The Dresden Files or the cozy fantasy vibe of Legends & Lattes, this is definitely one to check out.

And honestly? I’d love to see this turn into a series.
