Advice for Remy, Day 178. Try and keep the skill of being able to nap anywhere at the drop of a hat. When I was younger I remember being able to fall asleep on long car journeys. I’d be in the back of the car, bored stiff, long before the age of mobile phones and in-car DVD players, with nothing to do but stare out of the window and listen to my parents’ choice of music (Phil Collins, Rod Stewart or Chris De Burgh more often than not). Before long the scenery outside would have magically changed from Lincolnshire to Cornwall or Wales or Dorset in the blink of an eye, as if by magic. However, I also remember the last time I ever managed to do that, on a holiday to Wales at the age of 6 or 7. It wasn’t a conscious choice - I just could no longer fall asleep in the car. My perfect little time-travel transportation device had been lost forever, and remains beyond my reach to this day. And it’s not only in the car. I can’t remember the last time I managed to grab even the slightest of naps anywhere other than in my bed at night. Laying in the garden, on a sun lounger on a sunny holiday, or just about anywhere else relaxing you can think of. Nothing. I truly envy those people who are the opposite - who can virtually fall asleep standing up, at the drop of a hat. You’re still very much in the stage of being able to sleep all over the place (although only in the car if it’s moving for some reason - making petrol stops an adrenaline-fuelled race against time). I hope you can hold onto this ability for as long as possible, as it’ll serve you so well in your future, and save you a hell of a lot of boredom. After all, why try to occupy yourself on a seven hour car drive when you can close your eyes, then magically time-travel to a far off land before you know it?
