Permission to Land Howl’s Moving Castle Fanfic by MythboundCal
The rooftop garden was supposed to be hers.
Just a little patch—sunflowers, thyme, the stubborn beginnings of strawberries—built with stolen pots and repurposed roof tiles. She even strung up bells to keep Howl from crash-landing during one of his dramatic midair flutters.
It did not work.
Because today, like clockwork, the sky cracks open and Howl plummets from a swirl of violet clouds, a half-transformed bird man trailing feathers and apologies.
He lands directly in the lavender.
Sophie closes her book. Slowly. Deliberately. “That was a seedling.”
Howl coughs. “I brought you a new one.” He holds up a sprig of something definitely not lavender. Possibly cursed.
“You’re replanting it yourself,” she mutters, rising from her bench.
“I love when you speak with such conviction,” he says, still upside-down in her thyme.
She offers him a hand. He takes it.
“Howl,” she says, brushing feathers from his collar. “I made this space to be calm. You remember calm, don’t you? That thing you flirt with right before transforming into a dramatic whirlwind of feathers and flourishes?”
“Flirt?” His eyes gleam. “So you have noticed.”
Sophie doesn’t dignify that with an answer. She returns to her bench. The bells overhead chime gently in the breeze. The sky is clear again—sparkling with post-chaos quiet.
Howl sits beside her, dirt smudged on his cheek, cloak torn, grin intact.
“I do like the begonias,” he says softly, as if trying not to scare them.
She exhales. “Just… next time, announce yourself.”
“Like, ‘Permission to land, dearest Sophie, destroyer of dull moments?’”
She squints. “Exactly like that.”
Howl bows his head. “Duly noted.”
They sit in silence. The sun warms their shoulders. A single feather drifts between the rows of strawberries, unbothered.
The garden breathes.
And, for now, so does she.
