Title: Slip Knot (Part Three)
Summary: Jeon Jeongguk never thought he would find himself stuck eternally on the edge of the week. No matter what he seemed to do, Friday kept repeating itself over and over and over and over. It has to be some sort of divine intervention to give him the chance to win the gold medal he’d been training for- but, it always seems just out of his reach. This must be what he needs to break this spell- or, does it have something to do with Friday being his best friends first heartbreak?

Jeongguk picks up his phone, squinting at the bright light. He turns his alarm off, unplugging his phone and standing up, looking around his room. His duffel bag is sitting on his desk, packed and zipped up. Jeongguk shakes his head. “What the fuck,” he mumbles, taking his phone with him as he heads over to the bathroom.
Jeongguk quickly brushes his teeth before turning the shower on and undressing, setting his phone on the counter and stepping in cautiously as he shakes the strange dream from his mind. The warm water runs over his skin, soothing his aching muscles as he looks up and sighs, rubbing his scalp and wetting his hair. He hums softly, grabbing his bottle of shampoo and squirting a generous amount onto his palm and setting the bottle back down, closing his eyes as he lathers his hair. As he rinses his hair, he sighs and kneads at a knot in his neck, closing his eyes and reaching out for his bodywash, his hand briefly making contact with the bottle of conditioner- which crashes to the ground at his feet, although he stills at the familiarity of it and opens his eyes, turning his gaze down to the bottle. He pauses for a moment before reaching down and picking up the bottle, setting it back down.
His phone rings.
Jeongguk’s gaze snaps accusingly to the shower curtain, reaching out cautiously and swiping to answer the call, managing to get no water on his phone. There’s a long stretch of silence.
“Jeongguk? Hello?”
“Y/n?” His voice comes out louder than he intended and he hears a quiet yelp fall past her lips.
“Jesus, Jeon, hello?”
“U- hi, hello, can you hear me?” He ducks back into the shower, grabbing the body wash and squeezing it onto his palms, washing his body as his brain rushes to figure out why this all seems so familiar.
“Yeah, I can- are you in the shower? Pervert, you could’ve just waited to answer.” Chills dance up Jeongguk’s spine, and he freezes, his gaze turning back to the curtain. “Jeongguk? Hello?” He shakes his head, laughing softly.
“You’re the pervert- calling me while I’m in the shower. I’m naked right now, you know?” He can hear y/n scoffing and then the sound of keys jangling, and his heart thunders in his chest.
What the hell is happening?
“I’m outside your place, by the way. Should I wait out here, or…” Jeongguk’s lips turn down into a frown, and he leans his body further into the spray of water.
“You, uh… just come in- use your key or whatever. Just don’t come into the bathroom.” He laughs- almost nervously, “like I said, I’m naked. Like as in, nothing on.”
“Ew, get over yourself Jeon Jeongguk.” He can practically see her smiling and shaking her head, and his head pounds lightly as he closes his eyes, kneading his temples.
What the hell?
“I’ll…talk to you when I get in… like, through the bathroom door. Unless that weirds you out.” Jeongguk doesn’t respond for a while, and he hears y/n click her tongue, “Jeongguk? Hello?”
“Oh, uh, no that’s fine.”
“Ok, bye, weirdo.”
Jeongguk shakes his head when he hears his door to his apartment being opened and continues washing his body, rinsing off quickly and moving to massage some conditioner into his hair.
“Hurry up, Guk.”
“You shouldn’t be in such a rush, relax.” He murmurs teasingly before rinsing his hair and quickly turning the water off, hopping out and wrapping a towel around his waist.
He unlocks the door and opens it, shivering at the burst of cold air that rushes in, and brushes past y/n. “Grab my phone off the counter? I don’t want to get water on it.” She grabs it and follows him into his bedroom and sits down on his messy bed, looking down at the phone.
Jeongguk holds the towel at his waist tightly with one hand while rummaging through his drawers with the other, glancing over at y/n. his heart still pounding at the uncomfortable itch in the back of his head. “Sure, make yourself comfortable.” Y/n laughs, wiggling back into the oversized comforter and winking at him.
What’s wrong with me? I’m I hungover? I don’t remember drinking last night…
“I’m always comfortable here.” She sighs, rolling onto her side and closing her eyes. “Seriously though. Your bed is annoyingly comfortable. Mine feels like a rock compared to this.” Jeongguk shakes his head to clear his thoughts, grabbing a black hoodie, some boxers and sweatpants out of his dresser before waving his hand at her.
“Look away, I’m gonna get dressed.”
“Ooh, while I’m in the room? Are you sure?” She crawls further up the bed, burying herself in the heap of covers before turning her back to him. “Seems risky.”
“Unless you want to watch, look away,” he hisses, shaking his head and smiling as he quickly drops the towel and pulls his boxers on, his sweatpants and then shirt following.
“J-Jeongguk!.” Y/n rolls back onto her side, cheeks flaming as she brings her hands up to cover her face, “I almost saw your dick, you didn’t even give me time to turn!”
Jeongguk pauses, tying the waist band of his pants and tilting his head. “Did I…oh. I’m sorry, I guess I wasn’t paying attention? I think I’m a little distracted.”
She snorts. “Whatever, perv.” A sigh falls past her lips, causing his heart to stutter again. “Do I really have to go to school? Waking up this early? Is it even worth it?”
Jeongguk’s actions seem slower than normal to him, almost as if he was moving through water as he looks over at her, pieces slowly falling into place as she sighs.
“Couldn’t you just go for me? Take notes for me…why do I-”
“What the fuck,” Jeongguk curses under his breath, causing y/n to stop as she turns around to raise an eyebrow at him.
“You’re not dressed.” Y/n’s face heats up slightly.
“We’ve been through this before- I, I…you came in here, maybe it was a while ago? But I remember. I remember it. My body wash fell, and you called me, and…”
“Woah, calm down there Casanova.” Y/n sits up, tilting her head slightly. “What are you talking about?” Jeongguk frowns, tilting his head as he closes his eyes.
“Listen, just for a second…I…” He frowns, shaking his head again, more things slowly clicking in his brain, something in the back of his mind pleading with him, you’ve heard this before, you’ve seen this before. You’ve lived through this before.
“Jeongguk, did you go drinking without me last night? What the fuck, dude?”
Jeongguk shakes his head.
“Never mind- I, sorry. I must be remembering wrong. Anyways, we need to get going, so come on, let’s go.” When y/n just stares at him, a slightly concerned expression on her face, he sighs and throws the covers back. “Don’t worry, I’m just exhausted. Now, get up or else I’m laying on you.” He says this, the last part popping into his brain, the scene playing out perfectly in his head;
Y/n’s eyes snap open at this but she quickly lowers her lids, staring up at him with overly-hooded eyes and biting her lip, giving him an overly-sultry look. “Why would that motivate me to leave?” Jeongguk rolls his eyes, a small smile on his face as he kicks the side of his bed lightly.
But instead, y/n sits up, tilting her head in confusion at him. “What the hell is wrong with you today, Jeon? Are you feeling okay?” He blinks a few times, staring at her in confusion before his mouth drops open, and then shut. He shakes his head, waving his hand to dismiss her question.
“N-nothing, it’s fine. Let’s just go.”
The rest of the day passes like a blur, everything feeling slightly off, every word someone says itching the back of his brain, picking at his subconscious. By the time y/n has left for her date and he’s ready to race, his mind is completely blank as he runs through the track.
A crack of thunder, flash of lightning.
The winner being announced, and he runs over to his bag, digging out his phone. He dials her number before he even starts to leave.
“Y/n.” His voice is soft, his eyes raising to the sky as he begins to walk.
“What’s up? How’d you do, star runner?” Her voice cracks slightly and Jeongguk bites his lip, his grip on the duffle bag tightening as he continues walking.
“I didn’t win.” He can hear her sigh.
“I’m sorry, Kook.”
“It’s fine. It’s not a big deal.” He clenches his jaw, looking up at the sky, laughing slightly. “Anyways, you should get back to your date. I don’t…I don’t know why I called you, actually. I guess I just wanted to hear your voice, or something…everything just felt off today. But- no, shit, sorry. Go, please, enjoy your date.”
“Ah, I’m sorry. You just acted so weird this morning, I guess…I felt a little off too.” She laughs bitterly, “Today’s really our lucky day, isn’t it?”
“What do you mean?” He holds his breath, questioning his sanity as he prays for her to say the words he needs to hear to confirm what he was thinking about all day.
“I’m actually at home right now.” Jeongguk hears the faintest sniffle on the other end.
Fuck. Me.
Jeongguk doesn’t respond, simply stops walking as his eyes widen, watching the lightning dance across the sky.
“He, uh… never showed up…it’s not a big deal. I’m sorry you didn’t win…god. If I could do it all over again, I’d show up and support you…maybe things would’ve gone differently…ah, anyways, I’m gonna get to sleep. Get home saf-”
“What did you say?” His breath hitches.
“What?”
“If you could do it all over again?” Y/n pauses, sniffling slightly.
“Jeongguk, are you sure you’re okay?”
“Fuck, y/n, you’re a genius. That’s it. That’s it. That’s what’s been bothering me.”
“Jeongguk?” He picks up his pace, eyes shining.
“I just have to start over. That’s all. I have to win. I need you here.”
“Jeongguk, what are you talking about?”
“What? Nothing- fuck, y/n, I’m really sorry. I have to go. I promise I’ll explain everything in the morning when you come to pick me up, okay?”
“What do you mean, why would I-” Before she can ask, he hangs up, and before he realizes it he’s running through his apartment, throwing himself onto his bed, not bothering to change or even shut his door.
Please. Please, please. Jeongguk’s mind pleads as he feels sleep tugging at his conscious, pulling him out of panic as his phone vibrates next to him.
The phone illuminates with y/n’s profile, the decline and answer button moving slightly, his phone screen glitching and turning to black as a flash of light fills the room.
The blaring of Jeongguk’s alarm startles him awake and he bolts upright in bed, grabbing his phone and letting out a loud cheer as his Friday morning alarm stares up at him. He practically rips the chord out of his phone and dials y/n, standing up quickly and running over to the bathroom to check himself in the mirror, brushing his teeth quickly as he lets the water get hot.
His phone buzzes and he answers the call, stripping quickly and stepping into the shower. “Hey, y/n!” He calls out.
“Hey Je- wait, are you in the shower? Pervert, why did you answer the call if you’re showering?” Jeongguk grins, lathering his hair in shampoo.
“I’m naked also, Y/n. Covered in suds. There’s a mental image for you.” There’s a long pause before y/n coughs.
“Are you okay, Jeongguk?”
“Ripe as a peach.”
Again, silence.
“Are you sure? Because you’re either wasted, or having a very early mid-life crisis.” Jeongguk laughs.
“Just come in, okay? Whenever you get here, that is.”
“Mm, okay pervert.” The call ends and he hears his front door open.
“Oh, by the way, y/n! I didn’t shut the door.”
“You d- w- Jeongguk, what the fuck! That was not something I ever needed to see! Who the fuck showers with their curtain wide open anyways?” He doesn’t have a chance to get an answer in before she slams the door shut, “stop laughing.”
“I felt like…we needed to even the score.” He finishes up his usual routine, grabbing a towel and wrapping it around himself before pushing the door open.
“Huh?” She glances at him. “What do you mean?” Jeongguk grins, leaning down, his minty breath fanning across her face.
“Now we’ve both seen each other naked, baby.” Y/n rolls her eyes and shoves his shoulder.
“Pervert.”
“Can you get my phone?” He asks, moving over to his dresses and grabbing his clothes.
“Yeah, sure.” Y/n sits down on his bed, his phone in her hand. Jeongguk is already in his sweatpants and he grins.
“Comfy, right?” Y/n’s mouth clamps shut as she glares at him.
“You’re really freaking me out.” He moves forward.
“Oh? Am I?” She nods, laying down on his bed and closing her eyes.
“You’re right though. My bed feels like a rock compared to yours. I could just stay here forever.” Jeongguk hums in response, staring down at her. “God, is college really necessary?” She murmurs. “Do I have to get up this early? Can’t you just go to class for me? Take notes and everything…I can sleep here…” Jeongguk purses his lips.
“Is that what you want?” Her eyes snap open and she stares up at him. “Why don’t we just skip today, y/n?” He throws his shirt over his head before leaning over her. “I missed hanging out with you, y/n. Just me and you…you know?” She shudders slightly, her eyes narrowing as she watches him, a playful glint in her eyes.
“Yeah?” He nods.
“Yeah.”
“I missed you too,” her voice comes out a purr and she reaches up, wrapping her arms around his neck. Jeongguk’s eyes widen.
“R-really?” A blush creeps across her cheeks, and he tilts his head. “What’s wrong?”
“Honestly?” Something starts to click in the back of Jeongguk’s mind, and her sultry smile turns into a large grin. “I was kind of thrown off by how good you smell,” she closes her eyes and sighs. “so dreamy.” Jeongguk pushes away from her, ignoring her laughter. He grabs his bag and phone.
“Whatever,” his voice is tenser than he means for it to be and she frowns. “Let’s go.”
“Jeongguk?”
“I don’t want to be late, come on.” He walks out the door, not bothering to close it after him. Y/n hurries to catch up, shutting his door- making sure to grab his keys and lock it before speeding to catch up.
Jeongguk’s already at the elevator and Y/n sighs. “Jeongguk, I didn’t mean-” The elevator dings open and he steps in, his gaze briefly raising to meet the elderly man’s. Y/n’s mouth clamps shut and she slides in, standing close to Jeongguk and leaning into him slightly.
Once they reach the lobby, Jeongguk heads out, not waiting for y/n as she looks questioningly at him, speeding up to catch up to him. “Jeongguk, what’s wrong?” He looks over at her.
“Nothing, I just…I’m not in the best mood, I guess.”
“Is it…” She stops slightly, looking away. “Jeongguk…I’m sorry I’m not going to be there for you.” He tenses slightly.
“You’re ditching me for some random guy,” his voice comes out choked, and he clears his throat, looking away from her hurt expression. “He’s an asshole, y/n.”
“You don’t know him.”
“I don’t need to!” Jeongguk runs his hand through his hair and curses. “I need you there with me, y/n.” She bites her lip and stares down. “You’ve always been there for me, I can’t- I can’t win without you, y/n. I can’t do it.” She huffs, crossing her arms over her chest.
“Do you…do you want me to cancel?” Jeongguk’s heart swells.
“Yes. Please, y/n- please. I need you there, cheering me on. Please.” She sighs, looking at the ground.
“I’ll always be there when you need me, Jeongguk. You know that.” He smiles, moving forward and wrapping his arms around her in a hug.
“Thank you, y/n. I’m so sorry- I’m sorry I was so weird, I just…this has been eating at me…” He smiles down at her, grabbing her face and cradling it in his hands. “But now that I have my little good luck charm, I know I’ll win. Another gold for Golden Jeon.” He grins, placing a quick kiss to her forehead. “Thank you. You don’t know what this means to me.” She smiles sheepishly, sending a quick text before putting her phone away.
“Yeah, whatever. Let’s go get some breakfast, yeah?”
The darkening sky is filled with clouds when Jeongguk looks up, waiting on the sidelines for his portion of the race to begin, bouncing slightly as he shifts from foot to foot. Jeongguk is unable to shake the odd sense of nervousness that clings to him as he glances over at y/n, her spot on the bleachers seemingly shining through the stormy atmosphere as she beams at him. She gives him a cheesy thumbs up and he laughs, looking down at his phone as he moves to set it down.
His screen flashes, y/n’s contact name coming up, the answer and decline buttons shaking slightly. His gaze slowly turns up to see y/n rolling her eyes. “Give me that, Jeon. You don’t need any distractions.” She jumps down from her spot and glances at the couch before deciding its safe to move over. Jeongguk panics when she grabs the phone.
“No, wait!” She stares at him, her mouth dropping open.
“You are way too attached to this thing. Now hurry up and go, I’m pretty sure you’re up.” Jeongguk’s gaze whips to the field, “go on!” Y/n smiles. “You’re gonna do great.” His chest swells and he moves forward, taking his starting position on the track.
You can do this. You can do this. The gun fires, and Jeongguk breaks off into a sprint. Y/n’s here, she’s rooting for you. She’s cheering you on. Jeongguk hisses slightly, the rain now pouring down on them. No. Everything you need, everything you want- its here. Jeongguk stumbles slightly, barely managing to keep pace as he curses under his breath. Stop thinking about her. That asshole won’t hurt her. He can’t stand her up now. She’s safe with you, you helped her and she’ll help you.
Fuck, Jeongguk. Run. You need to go faster. Run.
Jeongguk clenches his jaw, his breathing slightly ragged as he moves quicker, panic rising in his heart. Just run. Lightning lights up the darkening sky, and his gaze briefly lifts upwards. Damn weather. His steps falter for a moment when gaze lands on y/n. Her body is almost wavering- blurred by the rain and wind. For a moment, he falters; she seems almost translucent, not quite gone, but not quite there. He can’t help but feel a twinge of guilt at her downcast look, although she quickly looks up and begins cheering loudly as another racer passes him.
“Jeongguk! Faster, go! Run faster! You can do this!”
Damnit Jeongguk. His gaze lands on the finish line and as he runs his vision blurs, narrowing down, the roaring of the crowd slipping away as he tries to push forward, tries to push past back into first place.
Jeongguk pushes past his teammates, ignoring the cheering and smiling, ignoring his coach who beckons him over. He makes a beeline straight for y/n, wrapping his arms around her, breathing heavily as she stumbles back against his weight, leaning up against the wall of the corridor leading into their locker room.
“I won.” He’s smiling wide, rain dripping from his hair as he cups the side of her face. “Y/n, thank you, it’s all because of you. It’s all okay now,” she stares at him, confusion in her eyes, but that quickly disappears as she rolls them.
“Whatever, weirdo. Don’t be so sappy.” He grins, placing a kiss on her cheek.
“You’re the best good luck charm ever.” She scoffs at his words.
“Whatever.”
As he briefly tells his couch his leaving, ignoring the jeers from his team as they shout about the celebration Jeongguk is about to have, he notices Y/n sniffle softly.
“Oh, are you cold? I have my hoodie in your car. You can put it on.” He grins, throwing his arm around her shoulders and pulling her closer. She doesn’t answer him, just keeps her head down. Jeongguk frowns. “Let’s get there fast…yeah? I’m sorry about the rain. You must be really cold.” She laughs softly.
“Did you just apologize for the rain, Jeongguk?” He blushes when she laughs again. “You really are something…”
He finally relaxes when he’s in her car, leaning his head back and taking a deep breath. It’s over. He smiles, glancing over at y/n. “My hoodie’s back there,” he motions to the backseats and she nods, setting her phone down on the center console. As she reaches back for the hoodie, he glances at her phone, grabbing it to keep it from getting wet due to her dripping clothes.
Jeongguk stares down at the screen, the dozens of read and unanswered texts all too inviting as he scrolls.
Y/n: I’m sorry, something came up and I have to cancel. Can we reschedule for another day?
Y/n: Hello?
Y/n: My friend really needs me…
Y/n: I know you’re reading these, I can see it. I’m sorry…please answer
Y/n: Yoongi?
Y/n: I know it’s shitty of me to cancel last minute…I’ll call you later, okay?
Jeongguk swallows thickly, looking up at y/n, jumping slightly when he finds her already staring at him.
“What are you doing?” She whispers.
“Y/n…” She takes the phone from him and sits back in her seat, huffing as she lays his hoodie around her like a blanket.
“I don’t want to hear it.”
“Y/n…he’s an ass. You shouldn’t be begging for his attention.” When she turns to him, he knows he fucked up. Her nostrils are flared and her expression is beyond furious- but none of that bothers him. For the first time, Jeongguk notices her puffy, bloodshot eyes. He sees the red rim around them, and the watery tears spilling down her cheeks, and his heart breaks.
“Fuck you Jeongguk!” Her shout physically knocks him back, and he stares at her, his eyes wide as she shakes her head. “You don’t even care do you? You don’t care that I really really liked this guy? Does it mean nothing to you? Does my happiness- fuck, Jeongguk. Shit. I dropped my plans for you. I skipped out on my date for you. For your stupid…fucking ego. What would it hurt if you didn’t have me there? You would’ve won anyways, asshole! You’re the fastest guy I’ve ever seen! And all you can say is he’s an asshole, yeah? He’s an asshole and you’re not? He’s an asshole for what, asking me out? For seeing me as someone…worth dating?” Y/n scoffs.
“No, y/n, that’s not it.”
“Oh, its not? What is it then, huh? What do you dislike about him so much?”
“H-he…he was gonna stand you up, y/n.” His voice is soft as he stares down at the ground. “I…I don’t want you getting-”
“Oh fuck off! Get out. Get out!” Jeongguk looks up at her, eyes wide.
“Y/n,”
“Get. Out. NOW! Out of my fucking car, out of my fucking goddamn car, get out!” Her voice is louder, accompanied by several claps of thunder as she reaches over and throws the door open. “You’re such an ass! I don’t know what it is, but today…I can’t s- just go. Go before I say something I regret. Now!” Jeongguk hangs his head.
“Y/n, I’m sorry…I thought-”
“What is that bullshit anyways? You don’t know him! You don’t know anyone who knows him! Why the fuck would you say he would stand me up? Huh? Is that how you justify this? You’re protecting me? From what, Jeongguk?” Jeongguk practically falls out of the car and she swallows thickly. “You’re a fucking asshole,” she whispers. “I hope you’re happy. Congratulations on first place.” She throws his hoodie at him and reaches over, pulling the door shut and driving away.
Jeongguk stares at the taillights as they disappear down the road, his throat seemingly closing up as he stares down at the hoodie.
Fuck. Fuck, no. Not like this, please, no. Jeongguk starts to run, faster than he’s ever gone before. Please no. I fucked up. Please, one more, one more day- please just once more. That’s all I need. I need to make things right. I need to help her, I need to be there for her. One more day is all I’m asking for. One more Friday. I’ll do it right this time, I thought I knew. I thought I knew what I needed to do, but I don’t care anymore. I don’t know, what I need to do but I know what I want. I want to be there for you, y/n. I want t- I need to put you first. It’s my turn. You’re an asshole, Jeongguk, a selfish, fucked up asshole. You don’t deserve to win- you don’t need to win, you need her. You need y/n, you need your best friend. You love her.
“I love her.”
Jeongguk bursts through the door, not bothering to shut it as he crashes into his bed, the bottom sheet popping off as the lamp on his desk crashes to the ground. “Please, please, please…” Jeongguk shuts his eyes tightly, the sound of the rain far too loud. “Come on…” He lays there for a few more minutes, darkness settling down on him like a blanket as he curses, standing up and hurling his phone across the room. “Fuck!” He shouts, “fuck, fuck, fuck!” He scrambles to grab his phone. “Please, please, please.” He clicks into Y/n’s contact, calling her and closing his eyes as the phone rings. “Please, y/n, answer…answer, please.”
When it goes to voicemail, he curses, a loud, strangled sob falling past his lips. “No, no, no. P-please…” His vision blurs as he stands up, the room seeming to spin around him. “If you’re not- not answering, I- I’m going to…I’m coming to…to get- get you.” Jeongguk stumbles out the door, still leaving it open as he forgoes the elevator and tumbles down the stairs, making it to the lobby in record time, and crashing through the front entrance. The rain falls around him, wetting his hair and clothes once again as he stumbles through the seemingly impossibly dark street.
Jeongguk’s vision blurs when the rain drops into his eyes, inhaling sharply as he feels his feet slipping underneath him, seemingly sinking past the ground as he flips forward. He’s falling in slow motion as he tries to catch himself- in his attempts to find his footing he finds his gaze turning up to the sky, the falling rain suspended in the air as he crashes to the ground, unable to keep his eyes open as he braces for impact.
Jeongguk’s back hits the warm, plush covers and his gaze snaps open as his phone buzzes from the nightstand. His arm shoots out immediately as he bolts upright in bed, his heart pounding and body slick with sweat as he grabs his phone and looks at it.
