yesss this is what im sayinggg, like i think the only thing damian wants is to feel like a regular person. he knows he isnt a regular person, but he wants to feel like he belongs in this society
maybe you guys are in a college class together and you sit by him. obviously everyone knows who hes bruce waynes son, and most people are too busy whispering about him to actually talk to him. you sit by him in that class and occasionally the two of you make light small talk and whatnot
eventually you start to sit by him outside of class too
maybe you see him while youre at lunch and you eagerly sit with him and ask him about his day or what hes having for lunch. you tell him where youre going for lucnh tomorrow and ask if he wants to join you. he agrees and he feels warm all over at the way you grin at him
you treat him like hes not bruce waynes son, like hes not the rude, emotionless asshole everyone thinks he is. you treat him like hes your friend. you call him 'dude'. no ones ever called him 'dude' before. he likes it, likes the way it feels to be called something so normal
eventually youll move off campus and into an apartment. you ask damian if he wants to be your roommate. he hesitates to answer, wondering if this is when the other shoes drops. as if you read his mind, you reassure him that you two would split the rent evenly. youve got a decent job and you can fully afford to pay your half of the rent. you dont expect him to pay more than you just because hes rich. he gives you a small smile and accepts.
youre always watching something, whether its a slasher movie like scream, reality tv (secret lives of mormon wives is a favorite, as is americas sweethearts), kids shows from your childhood (barbie life in the dreamhouse and elena of avalor are comfort shows), or youtube videos (chadchad, danny gonzalez, funkyfrogbait). damian asks you why youve always got something on the tv. it doesnt bother him, but it seems a little strange. you tell him its because you make references to shows and movies and youtubers you like, and you want him to get those references too. he starts paying a little more attention when youre watching something after that
eventually your birthday rolls around. its a saturday, so youve slept in late. when you finally do get up, its to the sound of damian knocking on your bedroom door. you tell him youll be out in a second, you just need to get your glasses. you walk out of your room and smell waffles. damian is fidgeting next to the table. "Dude. Did you make all of this?" he nods. you wrap him in a tight hug and thank him profusely. the waffles are heavenly, of course (A/N - please note that he for sure worked around any food allergies you might have. if you cant have waffles for whatever reason, he has a list of foods you can have in his phone, and he made one of those) when the two of you are done eating, he tells you to wait there and runs off to grab something from his room. he comes back with three presents for you. the first is a bunch of merch from your favorite content creator/s. the second is two tickets to your favorite artist/band/comedian (he tells you the second doesnt have to be for him, he doesnt expect you to take him just because he got you the gift. obviously you take him). the third is a collection of drawings. specifically, drawings of you. you remember those. hed done them for one of his art assignments. you tell him theyre the most incredible drawings youve ever seen. you frame them and hang them in your room. not for the first time, you feel butterflies just thinking about damian and how thoughtful he is
when the two of you finally start dating, hes very hesitant to introduce you to his family.
youve already met jon by now, damians closest friend and essentially another part of his family.
you meet selina next, and its at 9:30 am and shes broken in through the window because "Damian and I are getting brunch." she invites you along and chides damian for not telling her about you sooner.
damian suggests the two of you invite alfred over for dinner. you can tell hes nervous the whole time. he just wants his two favorite people to get along, can you blame him?? (the dinner goes perfect. alfred adores you and comes by once a month to have dinner with the two of you)
talia scares the shit out of you because its two am and the apartment should be empty because damians gone on patrol. she holds a knife to your throat and threatens you while vaguely implying she thinks youre good for him. "He is happy. Keep it that way."
cass and babs invite you out for coffee like functioning members of society do. they hand you a little gift basket of pastries and whatnot. they ask you genuine questions to get to know you, like functioning members of society do.
steph comments on all your posts, complimenting your hair, outfits, etc. the two of you build an easy friendship over social media. she messages you one day after finding out you and damian are together and tells you "if you break his heart ill break your face" you reply with a "yes ma'am 🫡" and then add a second message telling her about talias horrifying 2 am threat
jason knocks on the door one day to drop off a book damian left at his apartment. you tell him its actually your book, you had recommended it to damian a few weeks ago. the two of chat about books for a while and eventually start a book club with alfred and selina.
you suggest inviting dick, duke, and tim over for lunch. dick wraps you in a too-tight hug and makes too many puns but you can tell how genuinely excited he is for damian. duke is a sweetheart and just happy to be included. tim and damian bicker the whole time, save for the very end, when tim hugs damain awkwardly and tells him "I know we fight a lot, but you're still my little brother. I really am happy for you, Damian."
bruce is the last person you meet. youre kind of terrified. youre meeting your boyfriends dad, who happens to be the richest man in the world and hes the fucking batman. you have every right to be terrified. he invites you to the next family dinner. he half-watches, half-glares at you the whole time. you do your best to act like you arent sweating nervously. the food is amazing, of course, and damians siblings are all very fond of you by now. it goes pretty well. just before you leave, bruce asks you to take a walk with him through the gardens.
"I won't bother with a shovel talk, as I'm sure Damian's mother has that covered."
You nod. He stops walking and turns to face you.
"I'm sure you're aware of this by now, but Damian did not have an abundance of affection for most of his life. We've tried our best to amend that, but I have never seen him as happy as he is now. I will not threaten you to stay with my son. If it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out. But I do hope you stay with him. He adores you. I do not know his exact feelings, but I believe you make him whole. I have never seen him so at peace. He would give you the world if you asked for it. Damian is not a trusting person. He trusts you with his life. I only ask that you trust him with yours."
damain proposes to you on your next birthday. youve never said yes to anything faster than you did then.
your wedding is simple and joyful. his family is there. if your family/friends arent there for whatever reason, damians family readily makes up for it. steph is your best woman/maid of honor. cass is the flower girl. alfred officiates. damian trains titus to be the ring bearer. jon is damians best man. selena gives damian away. bruce cries when you ask him to give you away. the rest of his siblings are bridesmaids/bridesmen or groomsmen/groomswomen.
you honeymoon somewhere tropical, far away from the gloom of gotham.
