Traffic Gridlock: Massive Delays as Farmers' March to Delhi Causes Congestion
Key border points connecting Delhi with its satellite towns are experiencing severe traffic congestion and diversions ahead of a large-scale farmers’ march to the national capital.
Long queues of vehicles are visible on the highways at Ghazipur and Chilla borders, linking Delhi with Ghaziabad and Noida in Uttar Pradesh.
A frustrated commuter stranded on the DND flyover reported moving “only a kilometre in over an hour.” He described the traffic as stagnant for the past 20 minutes, with no apparent u-turn option.
Traffic is moving slowly on NH-48, the route connecting Delhi with Gurugram, with vehicles undergoing checks before entering the national capital.
Several border points, including Ghazipur, Singhu, and Tikri, have been fortified to prevent protesting farmers from entering Delhi. Concrete blocks, layers of barricades, barbed wires, and nails have been strategically placed on highways to impede the movement of tractors and trollies across these border points.
Despite talks between farmers and a government delegation last night, there was no consensus on three key demands, including a law guaranteeing the minimum support price (MSP).
In response to the anticipated disruption, Delhi Traffic Police have issued guidelines, restricting the entry of goods vehicles into Delhi via the Greater Noida Expressway. Goods vehicles are also prohibited from traveling between Sirsa in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh’s Surajpur via Parichowk.
To navigate around the traffic, those traveling to Delhi from the DND border are advised to take the elevated road via Sector 18 from Film City. Commuters from the Chilla side can use the Sector 14A Flyover, Roundabout Chowk, Sector 15 via Sandeep Paper Mill Chowk, Jhundapura Chowk.
Additionally, people traveling from Kalindi Kunj Border to Delhi are recommended to take the Mahamaya Flyover, while those using the Yamuna Expressway should exit at Jewar Toll towards Khurja and follow the Jahangirpur route.

Tachycardia road snarl
I was driving in traffic on a sideroad next to the expressway. I was in my car and reclined back and relaxed. There were an unusually high number of stoplights on the road and it took a while to get through all of them. Once I had an open area I tried to drive faster. But, I had to slow back down because school busses were moving into my lane from the sides. I wondered why all of a sudden there were school busses. I got stuck at another light because I couldn’t go fast enough to make it. When the light changed I swerved around the busses but got stuck again because there was a dump truck in the center lane … standing on end with a load of cinderblocks scattered from the bed. It was an accident, or the truck accidentally tipped over onto it’s end and was sticking straight up. It was just another delay for me.
The busses went straight on the road and I turned right to get out of the traffic. Now, instead of being in my car I was sitting in an office chair and scooting myself along the left side of the street, using my feet to pull me along slowly. A car behind me was wanting to pass me but I was blocking the lane, so I got up from the chair and started to push it along the road with my hands, jogging along behind it. I moved a little to the right in the three-lane street, as close to the right curb as I could. The car moved along with me and was still behind me. I glanced back and I think the car was a metallic red color, but I didn’t recognize the type of car.
Suddenly a white car was cutting across traffic from the opposite lanes, over a center divider, and right across the front of me and the chair, and ran up onto the sidewalk, where it came to an abrupt stop. I went to look at the driver as the car idled and slowly moved further off the roadway. I could see a woman inside the car through the side window, but now the car was really small, almost like a tiny die-cast car. Instead of a car interior, the woman seemed to be standing inside a tiny room in a house, inside the car. She stepped forward and back in the room, partially behind a counter, making the car move a bit as if it was very sensitive to her weight. I banged on the tiny car/house window to get her attention, and shouted, asking if she was okay. I had to shout because she was so tiny that my voice might not be heard. She only seemed to be really confused at my voice, and just confused in general, like she didn’t know where she was or what she was doing there.
Then the white car and the woman were gone, and the red car was still right behind me, but on the sidewalk. I needed to get off the sidewalk and back on the road. Suddenly, dozens of cars were flooding the roadway from all directions and I was hesitant to try to get onto the road with the traffic so close and fast. I noticed a space between some cars that seemed just enough, and …
I started to pedal the bicycle as hard as I could, trying to match speed with the traffic from a dead stop on the sidewalk, while just pushing myself out onto the roadway. I started to pedal so hard that the front wheel of the bicycle was lifting off the ground. I noticed the inner rim of the front wheel was metallic red. Even though I was pedaling as hard as possible I still couldn't go fast enough. The bike was only a single speed. Fortunately, I didn't have far to go before I was able to turn onto a sidestreet on the left. The cars didn’t follow me, but another bicyclist was on my right.
I was already aching and out of breath from the exertion of trying to go as fast as the cars, and I couldn’t let up because now the road was rougher, and it was harder to pedal even just to go slow. It was like trying to ride the bicycle through soft sand. I lost all momentum, but was still pushing as hard as I could on the pedals. I was out of breath and hurting everywhere, but I couldn’t stop. Then I hit a spot that was loose, deep gravel. The bike stopped suddenly as the front tire sank. I was already going so slow that I simply fell over to the left and landed against a vending machine with a loud clang.
(I woke in bed with my heart racing and my left arm and leg aching like I had been exercising.)
