Caught? Part two
Part one here
"You left it?!"
I winced at how loud his voice was, the room already felt small and he seriously wasn't helping.
"I-its not like I found anything.." I stammered, I knew as well as anyone why it was so critical that I hadn't lost the flash drive. While it didn't contain anything to critical it had a set of numbers that only I was supposed to have. The numbers set up a code in a computer, working like a trojan horse.
It leaks information and deletes things at random, and while harmless in the wrong hands it could also be deadly.
He rubbed his temples, taking a long drag at a breath. "Listen, just retrieve it, I don't care how you do it just get it back"
I quickly nodded mumblimg an incoherent "yes sir" before leaving the office. My stomach grumbled, oh how I'd love a coffee right now. It wouldn't hurt.... Order the coffee and leave, maybe he doesn't work today. Biting back my pride I entered to familiar coffee shop.
It smelled of books and the light murmur of noise acted as a perfect balance.
"Well, look who came back"
I froze, looking up at Onix. He was wearing the usual white shirt covered by the navy green apron that looked more brown at this point.
I forced myself to focus. Get the coffee and then leave.
"You going to get the regular dearest?"
"Yes please," I asked quietly.
He hummed in agreement, writing something on a paper and handing it to his coworker.
I sat down at a table, watching everyone like static on a TV. Maybe if I asked he would just give it to me. I thought weakly, turning my attention to the people behind the counter. Like he would just give it back. He also has my mask my face went pink at the thought.
"Regular for Mis Allison"
My head shot up, making my way over to the counter where a wipped coffee sat.
"May I ask why you were looking through my computer?"
"No" I said, without missing a beat,"I doesn't matter, not like I found anything anyways"
"Don't look to down," He leaned over the counter, giving me an almost childish grin, "here, you forgot this when you so rudely ran away from our conversation,"
I blinked, taking the small flash drive and examineing it closely. I shoved down a thank you.
"yah right, " I responded sarcastically, sticking it into my pocket and grabbing my drink. "If you think I'm going to fall for this then you truly are crazy"
He cocked his head to the side, watching me carefully, his eyes shined, a nice olive color meshing with specks of bright gold and hints of blue. I averted my eyes, feeling the red hue creep up into my features for a third time this week.
"Have I mentioned how cute you look when your sceptical?" I didn't meet his gaze, instead turned and left.
I made a beline to the local library, there was no way I was going to plug the flash drive into my own computer and risk being tracked.
The library was just down the street from the coffee shop, smart marketing. I headed inside the double doors and took a seat at one of the computers. I fingered the hard drive, warily putting it into the port and hearing the computer alert of the new object. I held my breath,
please don't blow up, if anything that would raise the most attention, I could fix it if it was a simple or even complex virus. But instead of anything drastic, the simple pop up window came up with the numbers still in place and- I stared at the words that came onto the screen. A phone number and a time to call. I sucked in another breath. Staring at the screen for well over a minute.
Bad idea. I took out a pencil and paper. It's a trick. I wrote down the number and the time. He's toying with your emotions. I erased the message from the flash drive and stuck it back into my pocket, quietly making my way back to headquarters. If he was, it was between us, no one else needed to know my business.
7:55 that's what the time read, and I was to call at 8:00. I had spent the last two hours making a mess of wires as I set up a makshift untraceable line. Just Incase he planned on tracking it. It would hold on a landline for ten seconds before switching to a new line.
Simple. Only none of this was simple. I dialed the number, listening to the flat tone of the line. It was loud in the small apartment, only paralleled with the sound of my heart ringing out of my chest.
"Hello?"
I froze, realized for the first time that I didn't know what to say. My leg thumped rhythmically in time with my quick paced heartbeats.
"I was told to call?" I hated how hoars my voice was, all the previous confidence leaving me with every siylobel.
There was a chuckle over the line, "are we alone?"
"Would you believe me if I said yes?"
"Considering you have no reason to lie, yes, I believe you"
I swallowed, reminding myself to breathe. If it's a trick, he'll want information
"How are you?"
Such a simple question. This shouldn't be this hard to answer
"I'm alright" I shifted in my seat, even though I was alone it felt as though a thousand eyes were trained on me. "How are you?" The question felt sappy in my mouth, a mechanical response without any real meaning. But I couldn't loose the feeling that it felt real.
"Feeling better now that I'm talking to you" a lie probably. I shook the thought away. Allowing a small smile to curl on my features.
"Did you want something?"
"No, I missed our chats, I didn't mean to scare you away today, seems like our conversations are always cut short."
I gave a small hum in agreement, more to myself than him. "Thank you for returning the flash drive" I said quietly.
"Your very welcome dearest, I knew they'd probably want it back and I didn't like the idea of you getting yelled at because of me-"
"Stop" the words came out of me before I could think better, this was too much.
"Stop?" He repeated slowly
"Toying with my emotions isn't going to get you anything but a slap across the face. I know this game, and you aren't going to win." Hang up, hang up before he can plead his case. It's all lies, you shouldn't have to go through this again. I hung up, letting the paranoia control me.
He's just another villain trying to get information through the weak link in the chain. The one who relyed on her ability to hack instead of the normal super abilities. I didn't let the thought go any further and instead went to bed.
@onestopheroxvillain I'm super sorry that it took me so long, I didn't forget life simply intervened, I know this is another cliffhanger but I had to chop it up into too seperate posts so expect the third part soon!!! Again thank you so much for the support!! ❤
