Ginny felt a pang of jealousy at seeing Angelina and Fred standing near the punch table, laughing at some joke her brother had probably just made.
Angelina looked breathtaking - she was in a sparkling, rose dust dress that hugged her tall, slim frame until the skirt flared out at the bottom. Her hair was in a voluminous bun, curls artistically falling out at various points. The way Angelina had described what she was going to wear and how her hair was going to be done didn’t do the sight justice, Ginny always knew the girl was drop dead gorgeous, but seeing her like this? It made her worry about her heart failing from skipping quite a few beats.
Fred was looking handsome as well, in a black tux with a bowtie and dancing shoes made to match Angelina’s dress, but Ginny didn’t really notice him - just Angelina.
“Ginny, heads up - the media’s here. Let’s put on a show for those nosy bastards, yea? Even if your heart lies elsewhere.” Blaise murmured next to her ear.
In the same tone, she whispered back, “Oh, does it now?”
“I’m your best friend... you don’t think I ever noticed? You look lovely in that emerald green dress by the way, is it made of silk?”
She took his hand and started walking toward the punch table. “Thank you, and yes, it is. In that case, would you mind doing a bit of a switcheroo? As your best friend, I know you’ve been eyeing my brother for some time now.”
He squeezed her hand. “Not exactly what I had in mind when I said ‘put on a show’, but I do like where you’re headed with this. I’m game.”
Angelina’s eyes lit up when she saw her friends. “Ginny, you look beautiful! And Blaise, you’re looking dapper, as usual.”
Blaise nodded in thanks as Ginny replied, “As do you! Mind introducing Blaise to your date? My teammate here has some experience being on the receiving end of one of his bludgers, but they’ve never gotten acquainted, really.”
She laughed. “Alright, this is Fred Weasley, Ginny’s brother. Fred, this me and Ginny’s friend, Blaise Zabini, or as I like to call him, one of the only two good Slytherins.”
“You’re forgetting Merlin and Andromeda Tonks,” Ginny pointed out.
“Oh, right! The exceptions,” she face-palmed, then grinned. “All jokes, of course.”
The boys shook hands and quickly got caught up in conversation about quidditch while Angelina pulled Ginny outside to one of the verandas.
“I do hate having the entire school watching us all the time,” she said, “It’s like they’re always waiting for us to mess up. It doesn’t bother me on the quidditch pitch, but at the Yule Ball, seriously?”
Ginny shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t really mind it. Let them see, y’know? I’m tired of having to be perfect all the time. I finally get why Fred and George act the way they do now.” They sat on a stone bench, gazing up at the stars.
“You wouldn’t know? If he’s your date I would assume you two were talking,” Ginny said, glancing at Angelina.
She replied, “Yea, my date. I don’t fancy him, Ginny, I would’ve told you if I had. He’s just my friend... and teammate.”
“Oh. That makes sense. Blaise is just my friend too... and teammate.” Ginny paused, then continued, “I wanted to ask someone else.”
Angelina turned to face her. “Ginny, I have a confession. I think I may have taken my crush’s brother to the Yule Ball instead of her. How do I fix that?”
Ginny pretended to be deep in thought. “Well... you didn’t hear this from me, but I know for a fact that your crush was a step ahead of you because her date just so happened to have a crush on your date. They’re probably off snogging somewhere, so that’s that.” She rested her head on Angelina’s shoulder, and Angelina rested her head on top of Ginny’s head. They interlocked their fingers and sat there, soaking in the silence and each other’s presence. The two of them looked like princesses, their young love radiating off of them now that it had come to light. Snow started falling lightly, and the moon came out from behind the winter clouds to shine light down on the two, almost as if mother nature was approving of their budding romance.
“How long?” Angelina asked.
“Since one of our sleepovers last winter,” Ginny admitted, “What about you?”
“Since the Quidditch Championship game last spring.”
“So... what do we do now?” Angelina pondered.
Ginny mused. “We could get married. Or engaged. Or make a blood pact. I think dating would be a good place to start, though.”
“Yea. Let them all see.” Ginny tilted her head up and kissed Angelina’s cheek.
“Okay.” Angelina’s thumb softly brushed the side of Ginny’s finger, and they watched the stars twinkle in the dark. The quiet didn’t last long, however, Blaise and Fred burst through the balcony doors, kissing passionately. Angelina and Ginny both jumped up, still holding hands.
Angelina yelled, “Get a room, you two!”
Blaise paused, looked over, saw their hands, looked at Ginny and gave her a thumbs up. He then proceeded to yell back, “You two will also be needing one soon, I’d reckon!”
“No,” Angelina retorted, “We actually have some dignity!”
“Not for long you won’t! I lost my virginity months ago!”
“No, dignity, Blaise!” Ginny shouts, “Not virginity!”
“Oh. I lost that even longer ago!” He blew them off and staggered around the corner sucking face with Fred, leaving the two girls standing there, shaking their heads.
“Merlin,” Ginny said, “Let’s never be that ridiculous in public, no matter how in love we are.”
Angelina rolled her eyes. “Agreed.”
They stared at each other in silence for a couple seconds, then busted out laughing, eyes squinting, hand clapping, wheezing and all.
Turns out, it wasn’t so hard falling in love with your best friend. And if Merlin finds favor in you, maybe they’ll fall for you too.
