yes hello i see falsettos all over my dash and im very interested in it but im not quite sure what it is or how to watch it. can you help me out??
Sure! I’m gonna go into this in a lot of detail but essentially it revolves around a complex neurotic family, planning a bar mitzvah, confronting queerness, and the AIDS crisis.
Ok so back in the 80′s this guy named William Finn wrote trilogy of one act musicals following the life of this guy named Marvin. They’re called In Trousers, March Of The Falsettos, and Falsettoland. The 2nd and 3rd ones were combined to make Falsettos. So yeah, Falsettos is just March Of The Falsettos and Falsettoland combined into one show. In Trousers just focusses on Marvin when he was younger and coming to terms with his sexuality, but it’s a lot more abstract, conceptual, and hard to explain than the others so I’m going to ignore it for now.
Ok so the musical starts and Marvin explains that he was married to a woman named Trina and had a son with her named Jason. After confronting his sexuality, he divorced her and is now with a man named Whizzer Brown. But he still wants to maintain the family structure that he had before, so he forces them all to interact and do stuff together even if everyone else doesn’t want to. There’s a lot of tension though, this situation isn’t working for anyone except Marvin, who is forcing everyone to essentially straddle two lives so he can maintain the family life he had before, while still being in a relationship with Whizzer (one of his key lines that he repeats is “i want it all”).
Basically everyone in this family is neurodivergent in one way or another, and Marvin suggests that Trina sees the psychiatrist that he’s been going to for years, named Mendel Weisenbachfeld. Mendel and Trina end up dating, which pisses off Marvin because he feels like Marvin is somehow taking away from his family.
Meanwhile his relationship with Whizzer has its own issues. Basically they’re both acting like their relationship is only physical, and that the domestic aspect of it is just for show. Marvin’s internalized homophobia makes him force Whizzer into this housewife role, and Whizzer is starting to get fed up with it.
I know I’m going into a TON of detail but I don’t want to make this incredibly long, sorry lol. Basically theres a point where everything totally goes south, everyone is tired of Marvin’s shit, his family begins avoiding him, and Whizzer leaves him.
Then act 2 begins. Act 2 (Falsettoland) basically focusses of Marvin’s growth as a person. He’s more empathetic, nicer, willing to work with people, he’s less uncomfortable with Trina and Mendel being togethers, and he has two cool ass lesbian neighbor friends named Cordelia and Dr. Charlotte. He and Whizzer eventually get back together and are having an all around nice relationship when they discover that Whizzer has AIDS. Bear in mind that this takes place in the 80s so no one really knows what it is, and theres no way to treat it. Marvin and Whizzer, and this entire messed up family are forced to deal with Whizzer’s declining health and eventual death. William Finn is brilliant really. He did an incredible job demonstrating the terror and injustice of the AIDS crisis by literally spending THREE musicals developing a character, having that character confront his sexuality, and go through so much development to establish a loving and healthy relationship. Then in just one moment its like “Whizzer has AIDS now. There’s nothing they can do about it and he’s going to die. Marvin will probably die too. All of these other characters are going to have to deal with the death of their loved ones”. I can’t do it justice but it really shows the pain felt during that time.
OK SO HERES HOW YOU CAN WATCH IT. Falsettos had its original broadway run in the 90s, and here’s a recording of that. There is currently a revival that will be running on Broadway until January 8th, and its so so so good. So far there is no bootleg, but the cast recording was just released a few days ago. Its for sale on itunes, but here’s a google drive file with it too. A few days ago PBS announced that they will be PROFESSIONALLY FILMING IT at some point so they can show it on tv. but we don’t have a date yet (i crie).
