smackjeeves is dying closing down at the end of the year, so i posted this there. i didn’t even realize that they shortened the “author’s comments” to only 400 characters until i was gonna write about SJ and hit the limit. ugh. here’s what I would have wrote if I wasn’t cut off lol: I'm sad it's SJ has come to this. Even before I started publishing comics on SJ in 2011 or so, I started using the site to read other artists' comics while I was still in elementary school in 2007ish. There's no doubt that SJ had a huge impact on me as an artist. I was already into manga growing up, but I don’t think I would have gotten so into creating my own comics if it weren’t for SJ. A majority of SJ users left when the site was bought out and everything about the site changed, and it’s really unfortunate that so much of internet and webcomic history will be lost. In a way, I feel that it’s kind of nice that the SJ owners got bought out and made some money since they surely weren’t profiting for all those years, but also…the site was not in good hands and IMMEDIATELY went to shit. And now the whole thing’s shutting down one year after the Big Change happened. What a shame. RIP you beautiful mess of a site.

CenturyLink had a major outage earlier today, so if any of Smack Jeeve's service are through them it might still be having issues?

Hmm, maybe? This has been going on for at least a couple of days I think (my memory is fussy but this was an issue yesterday for certain) and I can access it if I pretend I’m from the US, but European countries seem to get the “not available” result for me.

Smack Jeeves Goodbye Letter

Had to share this somewhere and decided Tumblr would be a fun place. XD I unfortunately had to leave Smack Jeeves since my comic format does not look good on their website.

I’m honestly past the point of being bitter and am at the “I don’t give a fuck :D” stage now. I have plenty of other places to post my comic now so no big deal.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

To whom it may concern,

As you know, I have written many emails since the announcement of the new website for Smack Jeeves. I'm going to be honest, I was looking forward to the new website. The changes looked like they were going to be a new experience and still hold some of what we hold dear from the original Smack Jeeves. I wasn't overly concerned about some of the missing features, such as customization, as other users have been.

I am saddened to learn that I was incredibly mistaken and am now expressing my profound disappointment in these disgusting, horrible, and even downright insulting changes.

Why is it insulting? Because I have been a member of the community since 2007, over 12 years, and have dedicated my life to creating comics. I have even completed a long term comic, something that very few people have accomplished in the world of webcomics. I have worked many hours on my comics. I have given up much of my social life to work on my comics. I have spent money and made sacrifices for my comics.

What has this update done for me? What has it done for my comic? I was excited to see that page format would be an option on the new SJ. That was honestly the one feature I looked forward to the most. I was mistaken. The new page format width is SO SO restrictive and small that it simply cannot be used at all. The text is so tiny that it is illegible and there is so much negative space on the sides that it just looks absolutely and utterly stupid. And 2 page spreads (splash pages), are one of the most epic and emotionally-driven parts of a page format comic. Those have been completely destroyed.

I gave you guys the benefit of the doubt and have been outright betrayed.

Not to mention how I have sent email after email and have received one. ONE reply. And the one reply contained ONE sentence. Not even a care in the world about it at all. Just "This is the way it is. We're too lazy to fix it. Not our problem."

You have proven without a doubt in my mind that the only thing that matters to you is the investors and not at all the community. You disgust me like no one has ever disgusted me before. You have destoryed the community, you have destroyed my comic and my livelihood.

I really hope that all of your investors lose ALL of their money and the only thing that happens with Smack Jeeves is that it has to shut down. That would be the last act of mercy you can give the community that you have destroyed and spit upon.

I hope you read this aloud to everyone in the cold, dark office of NHN and that you are having a good laugh over it. I hope you do laugh and I hope that Tapas and Line Webtoon steal all of your investors and are able to reap in your profits. As crappy as Line Webtoon is, at least they haven't completely ripped apart years of hard work and a community of indie artists like you have.

In the end, it doesn't matter to me whether you laugh or cry over this. In the end, the community you destroyed will be the ones laughing over the corpse of Smack Jeeves that you created.

I know I said I would write an email every day until you brought the forums back. That email series is now no more. I no longer care about Smack Jeeves at all and will simply take my business elsewhere.
