This is your friendly reminder to seek out local bookstores for the sake of your own pocket AND in support of local small businesses!

I just went to the small independent bookstore in my town, and my favorite thing about them is that they buy used books AND you can get either cash or store credit for that!

I have sold SO many books that I don’t plan on rereading. I’ll typically keep my all time favs and then sell whatever I’m done with or what ever I didn’t like. BUT THE POINT IS that this has allowed me to accrue store credit to buy MORE books. Like just the other day I bought Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros. WHICH WAS LISTED AT 30 DOLLARS HOLY SHIT. And I did not spend a dime.

So, rather than buying books at large bookstores like B&N, consider supporting your local small businesses. It keeps them open! And it may also save you money!

i found a really neat workbook for writers at my local bookstore!!

it’s called The Storyteller’s Workbook: An Inspirational, Interactive Guide to the Craft of Novel Writing and it’s by Adrienne Young and Isabel Ibañez.

it’s genuinely very cute and very helpful and has sections dedicated to plotting, character profiles, scheduling, revisions, and even finding agents to help publish! im enjoying the fuck out of it so far and recommend it to any writer who is having trouble getting themselves to sit down and actually write

That's No Jungle. That's Amazon

For a writer, today, publishing is like walking through a landscape that keeps changing. Amazon’s war with the big publishing houses is an important reason.  For a while, there seemed to be a truce between the two, but it appears Amazon has used the time to up its game.  Recently, Dean Koontz and  Patricia Cornwall have been lured away from their former publishers and accepted lucrative Amazon contracts.   What does Amazon do differently in the bookselling business? Well, In the past, publishers not only printed books but distributed them. That involved maintaining regional warehouses and bearing transportation costs. Amazon, one the other hand, sells ebooks or print-on-demand publications, cutting out the distribution costs and passing the savings along to authors it wants under contract. A person may lack pity for the big publishers, but much of the burden falls on the mom-and-pop bookstores. Some of these small enterprises have mounted a  rebellion against authors who flee to Amazon, refusing to carry their books; but the strategy is like biting off your nose to spite your face. Amazon reaps the benefit.   In fact, Amazon seems to be betting against print books and has grown its Kindle and Audible enterprises to near-monopolies.  For an author like me with no track record, the terrain is scary. Familiar trails are disappearing: agents are fewer in number; publishing houses and bookstores are an endangered species.  Amazon may soon be the only gorilla in the jungle. Sadly, I doubt the literature it generates will be prime.
