i have been learning about eustace the monk
outlaw, pirate, and mercenary in the early 1200s
was briefly an actual benedictine monk but left the order in order to get the guy who had his father killed (this was unsuccessful)
was originally the seneschal for the count of bologne but they had a falling out (possible eustace embezzled, or was accused of embezzling)
lived in the woods for a while. according to the medieval french romance about him, he stole the count's horse like five or six times
the count must've had terrible face blindness because several times eustace disguised himself and went to play a prank on the count. eventually the count resorted to arresting everyone he saw (60+ people). this did not work. eustace stole his horse again.
eustace made his way to the sea, where he got real good at sailing
swore allegiance to king john and was given 30 ships
did all kinds of piracy on john's behalf for several years
until, lo and behold, the count of bologne showed up in london to swear support for john
eustace laid eyes on the count and immediately switched sides back to france
died a few years later in a sea battle
so that's one of the men who inspired the robin hood mythos!
