there is an old graveyard hidden in the woods behind your friend’s house. no one remembers it’s there. no one knows how to get there by road. you have to wind your way through the woods. the graveyard’s inhabitants may not let you leave.
“hell is real” the billboards say. “if you die tonight do you know where you will go?” the billboards say. they follow you along the highway. they know you by name. you never answer them.
the corn watches you. the corn mazes will let you pass through them... if you’re fast enough. the people who get lost in the mazes pray to find their way out before dark. they know what lurks in the corn gets hungry.
there are churches on every corner. you never see anyone leave. you never will.
the local bookstore is haunted. no one know by who. the basement door locks behind you, and the stairs to the second level creak their way up each step with no one on them.
the river rises. it reaches the levee. it continues rising. it reaches the city edges. the river keeps rising.
you drive along the back-roads at night. the corn looms on either side. it seems to be closing in. your headlights start dimming. the corn gets closer. you swear you hear something from inside.
the county fair has a new contest every year. before you know it you’re in the contest. you pray to not come in last.

You’re driving along empty one lane roads in a rusty old pick-up truck. The air conditioning is broken, and it’s suffocating as you pass by fields of broad tobacco leaves, cotton, soybeans, sweet potatoes, cornstalks. You feel eyes on you and tell yourself it’s nothing. You drive through a town made up of 500 people, seven churches, and a Piggly Wiggly. All of the church signs beg you to repent, seek salvation, your soul is so dirty, but you don’t stop. The radio sputters to life, and you hear the twangs of a banjo behind a crooning, lonesome voice. / Spotify link / album art

Having relatives in small towns be like
"I couldn't live in a big city", they say. "Too much noise. Cars and such"
And at night you wonder if they can hear the snarls and sobs that keep you awake
