Smarmy git

It has occurred to me that I have often used this insult without realising that a lot of non-British readers won’t necessarily be familiar with it. 

Smarmy means “ingratiating and wheedling in a way that is regarded as insincere or excessive."  Some dictionaries include the word “smug” in the definition. 

I can see Sherlock throwing the insult at Mycroft, especially when his brother is making this sort of face. 

On the other hand, in my experience, there is something about Mycroft’s superiority that says it comes from actually BEING superior in intelligence anyway. His condescension is based on insincerity, and when he is being “nice” it is often meant in a sarcastic way. 

For me, smarmy is an oleaginous sort of ingratiation. The character who personifies that to me is Sebastian Wilkes, who greets Sherlock with the words “Buddy.”

But then follows up later with  this:
