Anon: On the matter of Cloud Atlas your analysis seems to overlook the major point; Asian actors are not being used in Cloud Atlas because the directors thought "hey let's just use a white guy!" If that was the case ALL the Asian actors would be played by white actors. There is a white actor playing an Asian man for the simple fact of continuity. That's it. The story is about connectedness, actors play multiple roles. (tbc) (cnt) There is a black woman playing a Polynesian and a Jewish heiress, there is an Asian woman playing a white woman and two men playing different types of women and the whole thing is directed by a trio of directors, one of them who is now a woman but was originally a man. This is not about there being a lack of Asian talent, it's all about continuity. I think Jim Sturgess is still a bit of an idiot, but I don't think when it's being said that they took forever to get the Asian make-up (cnt) (3 opps sorry rant) right that it was an exotic process, they literally wanted to try and get it as close as possible, and yes they may have been stereotypical, but if they left his eyes normal and said hey here's a white guy in Asia but he's Asian definitely that wouldn't have really worked. Yes it does come off as racist, but that is definitely not want the directors intended. (Fin)

I think your point is valid, the directors probably didn't intend their casting to be racist but yes, I also agree that it definitely came off that way. Although I think the directors were trying to play off the 'reincarnation' thing, the diversity in gender/race would have been better utilised by using actors who are legitimately the portrayed race. Sure, they are suppose to be the same person, but is it really necessary to cram the physical similarities down the reader's throats by using the same actors? I do appreciate your input and always enjoy an excellent debate, so thank you.
