How the Apple Watch Could Be A Better Traveling Companion
Wearable computing holds the promise of having critical and personal functions instantly available and securely fastened to your body, which would be extremely useful for travelers. Smart-watches such as the offerings by Apple, Samsung, Motorola, Fitbit, and Pebble are taking an initial step towards the huge potential of this technology. Since Apple is rumored to be prepping the Apple Watch 2.0, it is probably a good time to review what the Apple Watch 1.0 (hereafter called Watch) got right, and what it could do better in the future.
Photo caption: Various Watch screens show message processing options, mapping shortcuts and the inability to store larger amounts of data locally.
FOCUS ON THE USE CASES
Most reviews would focus on what features the Apple Watch has or doesn’t have, but that isn’t the primary thing that matters for products. What matters is whether a user is able to complete necessary tasks (use cases), and what the experience of doing it was like.
Let’s look at some primary use cases for a smart-watch and give them 1 (bad) - 5 (great) stars:
Task: Check the Time, Date, and Day Score: 4/5 stars (variant: check the time after a day in SF, and spending the night at a friend’s house with no charger) Other than for the aesthetic reasons, most of us wear a watch to be able to check the time, and quite possibly the day or date. It is surprising how many watches don’t provide these functions at a glance. Apple did a reasonable job of making the corners of most watch faces customizable with date and time options. However, only a limited number of them will show the day (e.g. Sunday) so your aesthetic options are limited. The Watch only has an 18 hour battery life, so if you have been using it for a full day and left in it’s normal mode overnight, you may be without a tool your rely on the next day. That’s not great for an expensive timepiece. The watch offers some ‘power off’, ‘power reserve’, and ‘airplane mode’ functions, which all offer to reduce battery consumption. They are also in different places in the UI and are difficult to find or discover the first time. In wearing my Watch for over a year I have had it go dead multiple times, and I am better than most people at bringing an extra charge cable with me.
Task: Read an Incoming Text Message Score: 3/5 stars (variant: review recent messages of all kinds) (variant: get back to a message you already read) Watch messaging is fairly integrated with the iPhone and most of the time messages come across promptly. There are some funny quirks like if you rapidly rotate your wrist after it vibrates you will see the latest message, but if you wait just a little too long it will show up as a red dot at the top of the screen requiring a down-swipe to view. This is inconsistent behavior from the standpoint of the user who doesn’t know exactly how much time has passed. Sometimes you can seamlessly read a message and sometimes you have to navigate multiple steps to it. Reading recent messages should be less painful than: 1) tap or rotate wrist, 2) swipe-down, 3) scroll to correct message, 4) tap to open, 5) scroll to bottom, 6) tap ‘dismiss’. This may seem simple, but try checking that address your friend sent you while driving down the freeway. There is not a central historical inbox of all past notifications, which would help rapidly find a specific message that came through recently, but isn’t still in the Notifications list. Getting back to a text message after the user cleared it requires getting back to the relevant app screen, scrolling to find the text messaging screen, tapping it, and finding the message. To make matters worse, a user often doesn’t remember which app produced the message (SnapChat, Text Message, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp), so if you clear a message by accident you may never find it again. Another thing complicating the task of reading a recent message is that the rotate-wrist function is poorly designed. Any twist of the wrist results in the screen going on, which is an incredible battery drain, and very distracting at night. Pebble had a much better algorithm where you had to shake your wrist forward and back rapidly which turned the screen on. This was much harder to do by accident, but was still fast and effective.
Task: Be Aware of Incoming Communications and Assist With Reducing Information Overload Score: 2/5 stars The watch should not be an additional screen which adds complexity and makes the user process more information. The watch should be a way to be more peripherally aware of events of interest, and process them faster and more efficiently than is possible with your phone. Unfortunately this is often not the case with the Watch. A lot of message management interactions take a sequence of swipe/touch steps to complete. For example: 1) tap or rotate wrist 2) swipe-down 3) swipe-left to start clear process 4) tap clear. Slide-tap works fine on a phone, but it is one step more than a “flick gesture” and tapping small buttons is difficult while walking or driving. An additional issue is that any given message has two different buttons for saying you are done with it. If you swipe left on a message it will give you a ‘clear’ option, but if you open the same message and scroll down you get a ‘Dismiss’ option. It isn’t obvious what either of these mean in terms of resulting action - will it still show up in your inbox or not? Is Dismiss the same as Clear? After testing ‘Clearing' a text message out of Notifications on the Watch, it continued to show as ‘unread’ on the iPhone, so there are obviously two different message queues. This means that different devices are forcing the user to process the message twice. The user would actually get a better task experience if they just owned an iPhone (process the message once) versus processing it twice if they own the watch as well. The Watch also has another way to close a screen, which is to put your palm over the watch face to shut it off. This action is extremely intuitive and fast. Unfortunately it isn’t well utilized because even if the user was reading a message and then chose to palm-close it, the Watch doesn’t register the message as being ‘viewed'. This means the user has to go back again later to formally re-process and clear it later. The Watch hasn’t been designed to intuit what the user meant to do what they would want done. Email isn’t any better. An Email message on the watch gives options for ‘Archive’ and ‘Dismiss’, but the shortcut on the main listing (swipe-left) goes to Dismiss instead of Archive which is what you want to clear it from your Inbox in Gmail. iMessage syncing also isn’t great. My watch buzzes to tell me there’s a new message. I open the message on my watch and view the message. iMessage redundantly pops up on my laptop showing me the same message I had already viewed a few seconds later. So in general, there is a great deal of extra message processing by the user going on and the Watch has created redundant user task flows, instead of streamlining and reducing them in many cases.
Task: Check the Number of Steps Walked Today Score: 1/5 stars The Activity app on both the iPhone and the Watch leave a lot to be desired. They are more focused on high-level views of goal achievement instead of providing specifics of what has been completed. Both are useful, but not everyone has set goals or cares about meeting them every day. They probably do care about how far they walked when they’re on a hike or run. It is impossible to get this data from the Activity Glance view on the Watch. It will tell you how long you have been exercising for but not how much. Fortunately another app called Stepz ties into the same health data and shows steps, steps over time, and progress towards goal. This has to be added to the Glances section for faster access.
Task: Do Your Daily Activities While Wearing Your Watch Score: 2/5 stars Watches should be capable of dealing with typical situations their users find themselves in. Ideally the user wouldn’t have to constantly review whether all of the things they are wearing or carrying are capable of dealing with a new situation they find themselves in. This is more relevant when traveling where environments are more challenging (think rafting, bungee jumping, motorcycling). Clearly the Watch should be waterproof. The user shouldn’t have to take it off if they go for a dip in a stream on a hot day, or get caught in a rainstorm on a motorbike. Actually the Watch is swim-proof but Apple refuses to advertise it, which hinders effective use by users. The Watch does a pretty good job of staying attached to your body. Their bands are very secure even for classier options like the milanese loop. People typically move their arms around a lot to gesture, drive a car, or even while sleeping. Unfortunately the Watch turns the screen on with only a small tilt of the wrist, which happens frequently all day long, resulting in extensive battery drain and unnecessary screen-flashing in dark environments like movie theaters. The Watch does have a setting for tap-to-activate-screen, but it doesn’t always register a tap and the whole use case of "glancing at the time" is negated when you have to tap with another hand before you can "glance". Durability of the sapphire screen seems fine - I have occasionally banged it on rocks and cement for over a year and it shows no scratches. Also, see above comments on the need to recharge and manage power which hinders the user from ignoring the watch and going about their daily activities.
Task: Pay For Something With Your Watch Score: 2/5 stars (variant: enter a movie theatre with your watch-based movie ticket) The promise of Apple Pay was that you could seamlessly walk up to a register, wave your wrist in front of the reader, confirm your purchase, and have a receipt emailed to you. This effortless payment vision is typically not how the use case pans out in reality. First of all the user needs to register a card. Some cards, such as BarclayCard require you to call them to process the registration, and it is one registration for your phone and one for your watch. If you ever buy a new phone, or clear the settings on your Watch, you will need to re-register. The Watch communicates with the merchant via your phone, so if you left your phone at home you can’t pay for anything. If you pay for a coffee at Starbucks, you have to find the hidden shortcut to activate Apply Pay on the Watch (double-tap silver button) and then wave your hand in front of the reader. Doing this results in the watch screen facing away from you - meaning that you can’t see what it is showing you. When I purchased the coffee I never saw the screen, never got a screen confirming the amount and asking to confirm the purchase, and it used my default credit card without asking if I would like to use another one. The clerk had to tell me that the purchase was complete. That is not how the flow of a purchasing experience should work and nothing should be charged without confirmation by the user. A better use case design would be 1) Wave watch in front of reader 2) watch buzzes calmly until you look at the screen 3) select card on watch screen 4) confirm purchase amount on screen 5) see confirmation that payment is made. Using Apple Pay at the grocery store was also bad. There was no option to ‘pay by Apple Pay’. Instead you had to choose to pay by credit card, and then after selecting this, wave the watch in front of the reader. It had similar issues of lack of feedback about whether payment had been processed, which is something you REALLY want to know before walking away from the self-checkout kiosks. It’s also a bad sign when you have to ask the checkout clerk how to use the machine. I have also explored the use case of purchasing tickets online, adding them to the Apple Wallet, and then using the QR code to be scanned by the clerk to enter directly into the theatre. This worked amazingly well through the ordering stages. Then the Wallet failed by automatically showing my ticket on the screen as I raised my wrist outside the theatre, and then not showing the ticket when I got up to the clerk inside the theatre. Thus, I spent time digging through the app navigation screen to find the wallet app, creating a line behind me at the register. If Apple did more to utilize location to show relevant information for tasks that are in process, and did more to confirm with users when decisions need to be made or tasks are completed, this could be very useful.
Task: Set a Timer for an Item on the Stove Score: 4/5 stars (mostly for Siri integration) The standard way of doing this is to: 1) click crown, 2) scroll to the countdown icon (which looks a lot like the stopwatch icon) 3) scroll the Crown to get the desired number 4) click Start. This is reasonable, but not great. Navigating to launch an app is bit error prone and the user has to switch between two different input methods (crown and screen tapping) to get it started. A much more streamlined way to set a timer is to say “Hey Siri, set timer for 20 minutes.”, which has the same effect if Siri isn’t having an off-day. It is also possible to set one of the ‘complications’ (corner areas on the watch face) to show the countdown timer logo, and if you click it the app will launch automatically. Not all watch faces support this. The Siri method of setting time feels somewhat magical and fast, just like the entire Watch should be. But Siri doesn’t understand you all the time, gets perturbed about background music, comes on without you asking for her, and won’t work if you have your devices in ‘airplane mode’.
Task: Quickly Access a Common Feature Score: 2/5 stars (slightly redeemed because Complications do allow fast access to some features) The Watch doesn’t really have a lot of shortcuts. It has fast methods of accessing Apple Pay, Friends List (useless), app navigation, backwards navigation, Notifications, Complications on the watch face, and Glances. Glances is the primary method of customizing faster access to frequently used apps. Unfortunately it involves a flick-up from the bottom of the screen. Similarly to the iPhone, it doesn’t always register on the first try, requiring re-swiping. Once you get into glances, it will load the last-used Glance first. Navigation is left to right scrolling. There are several issues with this. One is that you don’t know where it will re-open to, and if you are driving (see below) you can’t easily tell if you need to scroll left or right to get to the desired screen. Remember whether something is in Glances, and how to access it is also not trivial. Here is the worst-case scenario for me checking my heart rate: 1) rotate wrist, 2) swipe up, 3) right-swipe, 4) right-swipe, 5) right-swipe, 6) right-swipe, 7) right-swipe, 8) wait for scan to process. That is a huge number of steps and it is made worse by not being consistent each time. While testing this I also accidentally tapped an item while trying to scroll across it, which opened the app and got me so far away from my goal that I exited and went back to the home screen. This is not what you would call a simple navigation experience. The main app navigation screen leaves a lot to be desired as well. Apple pioneered the pairing of icons with labels below them, which is a highly usable way of identifying objects. Instead they have now gone back to large numbers of extremely small and cryptic icons, arranged in a hard to remember layout, without labels. This is so “fiddly” and error prone as to be basically unusable while driving a car. There is limited real-estate, but this is clearly not the best solution. Surprisingly, quite a few shortcut methods aren’t even used on the Watch. For example, left-edge-swipe, right-edge-swipe, press and hold screen in sleep mode, diagonal-swipe gestures, etc could be made available to user to rapidly access commonly used functions.
Task: Put the Watch On, Take the Watch Off Score: 4/5 stars Apple innovated a lot on watch bands, and moved away from the user-disempowering designs created over the last several hundred years by watchmakers who wanted to keep customers coming back into their shops for watch alterations. The standard rubber band seems to be comfortable and secure. The milanese loop magnet fastener can be a little tricky, but once you get used to it, it is very secure and easily resizable while wearing it. Apple could have done more to ship the product with a charging stand, where you can easily hang the watch after taking it off, but in general, taking the watch off is fine. I have never had the Watch fall off by accident, which is important.
Task: Do a Task While Driving or Distracted Score: 3/5 (responding to the last text message is a pretty good experience) Siri helps with some of these tasks, but she also fails for a variety of reasons and consequently the user is often stuck pulling over and doing a task manually. The Watch should hold the promise of being able to quickly tap a couple of times at your wrist while driving and get typical tasks completed. Things like reading a text, doing a quick response to a text, checking the weather, checking traffic on the route home, getting directions home, and canceling route guidance, should all be extremely simple operations that don’t require much navigation or eye-contact. Text messaging integration on the Watch is OK for this purpose. Finding older texts requires using the app navigation screen which is too complex to be used while driving. Replying to a text message can require scrolling down to the bottom of the message instead of clicking a button at the top or on the side. Scrolling, or swipe-and-click, are not great interaction methods if the user is doing other complex like driving simultaneously. Apple has included some shortcut replies (e.g. Thanks!, OK, Yes, No) which auto-send when you press them, which is great. Message send is confirmed by visual feedback, but not by haptic feedback (vibration), which would be better for drivers. Maps does have some shortcut features for getting home, getting to work, etc. However when I tested the ‘go Home’ feature, it gave me a route from my work address to my home address, when I was currently sitting in my home office, so it doesn’t appear to be very smart. Adding features like checking traffic would be useful. Launching any of these features requires going to the Glance screen for Maps, which is not a great experience while driving. In general, interacting with the watch requires far too much visual attention and many critical tasks require too many steps to complete them.
Sync Your Watch to a New Phone Score: 1/5 I recently had to get a new iPhone and discovered the hard way that Apple really hasn’t thought through the Watch-registration process with a new phone. Their solution is essentially to wipe the watch of all data stored on it, and restart a registration process with a new phone from scratch. This requires re-registering all credit cards with Apple Pay, re-installing apps and reconfiguring Glances, among other things. The Watch isn’t an extension of your personal identity with your trusted data on it - it is an additional screen for your iPhone which can’t operate without it and will forget everything it knows if you get a new phone. Even Apple’s instructions on how to re-register your Watch are flawed and tell you to access screens that are visible only after you have wiped the Watch and started over. Apple should be encouraging people to buy new phones, not punishing them for doing so.

CONCLUSIONS
A wearable computer should be something personal and trustworthy. It should be highly customizable and it should learn from you. It should be your personal assistant and it should make your life easier. It should empower you to do things you couldn't do before, and perform them more effectively. Apple could move the Watch in this direction, but they seem to increasingly be more interested in adding features and worrying about hardware aesthetics to the exclusion of most other factors.
Predictions for what Apple will do with the Watch 2.0:
They will try to make the watch slimmer. They will likely do this at the expense of extending battery life.
They will try to add additional functions, like more health monitoring.
They may try to decouple the watch from the phone (good) and charge for additional device cell plans (bad).
Little will be done to improve navigation or reduce the number of steps necessary for common tasks.
Smart-watches which want to move in the direction of valuable wearable devices that we can’t live without should bear in mind the following design characteristics:
It should be capable of doing common scenarios and use cases with minimal effort. These primary use cases should be defended and weighed against all new incoming features.
Ability to complete simple use cases end-to-end from the watch without phone support.
Ability to complete simple tasks in less than 3 interactions (e.g. taps).
Be more efficient to do target tasks on the watch than on the iPhone. If it isn’t easier then it doesn’t add value.
The watch should do what the user intended to do. The user has limited attention when dealing with a watch and the watch should figure out more of what it needs to do and then do it, by itself.
The user wants to do less tasks more efficiently. Automate more of what the user needs to do and help them complete the necessary ones with less effort.
Become the trusted companion of the user. Become the thing which knows them intimately and which they would feel naked leaving home without. Become the thing that is looking out for the user.
Focusing on these issues would make smart-watches better for travelers. In general, designing for travelers is very similar to designing for quality, utility, and reliability. If Apple designed their devices for these demanding users then they would have a happier user base across the board. It remains to be seen how long it takes smart-watches to turn into real wearables.
