More of this sleepy eyed fuzzy stuff please. My request comes in relation to this is what gear I've been operating in for the past couple or so weeks. So maybe this Smile Machine EP comes at the exact right time, but chances are I would have been a big fan of it anyway. Jordyn Blakely has spent time drumming in bands like Stove and Jackal Onasis, but has stepped out for her solo debut with Bye for Now. Instantly you'll notice that the thick syrupy lo-fi fuzz has carried over from her prior commitments, which possibly tells you something about her importance to aforementioned bands. With Bye for Now, however, we're slowed down some with riffs and distortion that move along in a shoegaze styled pace. Blakely's high pitched and nearly faint vocals parallel well with mountainous but melancholy tones throughout; outlining five songs that tackle a host of issues from mental health, anxiety, relationships and so on. A cathartic release for Blakely, no doubt, and one that should find itself instantly relatable and endlessly catchy among listeners. Smile Machine – Pretty Today (stream) BUY IT!
