every day that separates me from the city that became my home fills me up with more and more burning nostalgia. it destroys me to know that the life I built there is forever in the past, that that seemingly endless phase of my life is now gone. my present is in the country where I was born; but will I ever again feel at home again here?´

these feelings can't be divorced from my studies. although each day I'm learning so much and honing my interests, when the days are long it's a bit painful to remember the easy life I gave up. this is everything I've ever wanted, though...isn't it?

last week I finally started my PhD program! it's so surreal to be here. how long have I daydreamed about my first day of class? was it really six months ago that I came to visit campus for the first time? despite the high intellectual demand, everything feels more chill than my undergrad experience. instead of pouring my every fiber of being into making the grade, my entire purpose is instead steeping my mind in new ideas and becoming a better scientist. and despite the stress, that's an incredibly relaxing shift.
just texted my friend „okay, I’m ready to dumble“ and this honestly tells you so much about how my last week of the semester is going

hello babes, long time no see! my gap year has come to a close, and now I'm working my summer job teaching CS and preparing to head back to my country. it's really difficult to say goodbye to the city I've learned to call home, given that living there was my biggest motivation for the last two years and that I feel like there's more left for me here. that said, I'm also looking forward to my next chapter. after so many years daydreaming about starting a PhD in my field, I can't believe I'm really starting it in August!
to myself two years ago, the girl struggling with the worst anxiety and depression of her life: hang in there, love. you can't possibly imagine now much better it gets ✨

there's sixteen days before my first application deadline, so I spent the morning working on the statement of purpose. the other day I did a truly productive brainstorming session about my research interests, and I'm happy with how I was able to integrate that into my draft. I also did some major restructuring; after teasing everything apart at the seams, I'm not sure quite how to pull it back together. that's a problem for future me, though. there's already no comparing this draft with what I submitted last year, so I call that a win even if I don't have any idea whether all this work is going to pay off. besides, I've really missed writing with a purpose (I'm just not getting enough of that this year) and this process has clarified just how much this the right decision. hopefully my excitement and clarity shines through in the statement. either way, I was grinning my whole way through the morning, thinking about what exciting new work a PhD will bring. if I don't get in this year, I'll try again 💪
