will’s mom is friends with eklund’s mom and cat toffoli and they’re both woke. I agree with you, people act as if they know his family in real life but that’s not the case. people created a narrative in their minds that his family is evil and conservative but we don’t have any proof. the only thing we know is that they’re catholic but that doesn’t mean they’re conservative and much less trump level evilness like some people think they are. my aunt is catholic and she’s the opposite of conservative. I’m not catholic and she went to pride parades with me, never voted for right wing candidates etc. I’m not saying his family is the same as my aunt lol but the only reason people think they’re conservatives is bc they’re catholic, there’s no “proof” other than this and this is not even proof. I think some people confuse christians with catholics and while catholics do have a certain amount of repression when it comes to certain subjects, when you compare them to christians, catholics are so much more open minded and allow more things than christians do. and even if his family is actually conservative, doesn’t mean will is exactly like his family, he’s younger, different generation, especially now living in san jose, I think meeting new people in the community there (most people in san jose are minorities like latinos, asian people etc) would help broaden his world view if it was similar to his family before living in sj. and I have hope in his sister, she goes to college and that helps to get rid of ignorance when it comes to political subjects, I’ve read the bc students were screaming at the beanpot something against the epstein files (idk if it’s true or not) so the students are somewhat wokeish. also based on will’s taste of music and tv shows (very girly pop culture, katy perry, euphoria etc), him saying he loves to dance and him not being worried about saying all those things to the media, not realizing how it could sound, means that at least when it comes to those specific subjects, his family wasn’t specifying roles for him to fit in. of course there could’ve been still repression in some other parts of his life and that does seem like it happened just based on his behavior but we don’t know if it came from his family or school, friends etc (aka gabe and leno clowning will for not liking country and liking pop music). and I think if his family was as conservative and as evil as some people think, they wouldn’t allow him to like those tv shows, music, much less dancing. I have friends (men) that had conservative dads that literally told them they couldn’t dance at all or they would physically hurt them and when we were kids they couldn’t watch the same tv shows as us like ladybug etc. anyway sorry to write all that, nothing is directed to you btw bc I know you think similarly, it’s just to clear that up for some anons because a lot of people think it’s one extreme or the other extreme and they believe a narrative that other fans have built in their minds without any proof but real life is different and has layers and grace watching the bad bunny’s concert is a positive indication that at the very least they’re not extremists and that in itself crumbles the narrative some fans have that they’re evil
yes, thank you for this
i totally agree that we don't actually know their political affiliations and it seems quite unlikely that they are extremists. whether they are establishment democrats or republicans, at this point those two are basically the same thing anyways.
what i DO however find interesting to analyse about his family is colleen's overbearing helicopter mom tendencies. She has boy mom written all over her which is kind of fascinating considering that her hockey boy son also has all of these other traditionally feminine interests outside of hockey.
it also seems to me that bill was a very passive father, and not at all like the usual intense coach like hockey dads, he's just kinda along for the ride and happy to be there, while colleen really seems to be the dirving force of the family.
there are so many interesting characterisations that could be pulled from the two of them and the "evil catholics" is by far the least interesting ones
also to the point of catholicism; i'm a european cradle catholic, so i don't know US catholicism as well, but in general you're correct that catholics (with a few exceptions here and there) don't take their christianity nearly as seriously as some of the other US denominations of chritsianity (i'm looking at you bible belt christians)
funnily enough british catholics are some of the most commited and conservative catholics i have come across, which makes sense when you look at the history of catholicism and the church of england in the UK.
in general, the fun thing about catholicism is that you can sin as long as you go to confession afterwards, and a lot of catholics live exactly that way.
back to will, i do agree that there is some repression, catholics are great at repression and i think there's a very real possibility that we can also draw a direct line back to his time with the USNTDP, the horror stories that come from that place... and ever adaptable will adapted himself to the environment and repressed as good as he could to survive and even thrive.
i'm also convinced that a friendship with a guy like leno wasn't easy and i find it fascinating that even though him and leno have known each other much longer, he seems to be much closer to gabe now. Gabe, who just like will also has a certain softness to him that does not necessarily fit perfectly into the hard masculine environments of professional sports, and he's a legacy kid on top of that.
