Flashback to the 2019 H st festival! H Street corridor is one of my favorite places in the District ( 1st is Anacostia)! So much has changed on this street since I first set foot on it in 2015, scouting Black businesses for the first @ourblackbookmag ! Months after graduating Howard I was finally escaping the confines of the Howard bubble students often get caught up in while on campus. Even back then people were saying that it was changing; now in 2020 one may not even recognize H st. . . Many of the businesses we initially found like: @averysdc @halftime_on_h @touchedc @horaceanddickies are now all closed permanently. (#horaceanddickies still has another location) @kheprasrawfoodjuicebar was displaced earlier this year but is still running at @thetastemakersdc . @eurostyle_dc moved shop up to Silver Spring. @caribbeancitations open + closed on H St within 6 months. It’s been hard for Black businesses on H st but that doesn’t mean we haven’t also made progress! _________ Businesses like @dc_diner202 @turningnatural @elroybardc @ethiopicdc @ontherocksdc have all held their places firmly. New businesses like @cane_dc @kitsuenbar have opened with much success! @benseverything has a location on H st + so is the original @poboyjim! @milkandhoneydc acquired #SmithCommons space for a seamless transition while serving the same community. @jerkatnite + @kitchencraycafe are in the process of opening their new locations on H st. _____________ Things aren’t as bleak as we may think! Things don’t have to be so bleak if we continue to support these businesses & other new Black businesses that spring up. Even in the midst of all this uncertainty one thing that remains certain is unity is the key our liberation. That means checking out + checking in on new + old Black businesses consistently.
