This is Smithfield’s meat market. In medieval times it was a large grassland, ideal for cattle, and has been a meat market since the 10th century AD. It was also an execution site. William Wallace was hung, drawn and quartered here. In the 19th century, when divorce was hard, husbands would bring their wives here and sell them 🤦🏻‍♀️ The current market was designed and built in Victorian times (19th century) and is a grade 2 listed building. In 1945, at the end of the Second World War, part of it was hit by a V2 rocket killing 110 people. The remainder of the hit side was pulled down and rebuilt.
