jashtober day 4: Stars!
It is an inevitable part of life for Candlecreatures that they will, at least once in their life, burn out. Once this has occurred, they enter an almost hibernation like stage in which their bodies become composed of a semisolid smoke. This is often a period of low energy and frustration for most Candlecreatures, and one which many struggle to escape from.
Although many Candlecreatures will encounter this state many times in their lives, this does not make escape any easier. Sometimes it can be escaped with a mild struggle, and sometimes just by waiting it out. Sometimes struggling or waiting can worsen the state.
It is not unusual for a Candlecreature in this state to struggle to remember how they ever made light at all.
(Asking celery cuz this would be mean to ask the boys :( What wouldve happened if Roman wasn't there in stopped time when Virgil accidentally summoned the smoke demon monster thingy
Spoilers for ALiP if you haven’t gotten past chapter 14.
There are a few options that could happen. Virgil would have stayed silent so it’s possible the creature would just look at him, see his weakened state, and just left uninterested. Seeing Roman frozen probably wouldn’t have interested him as well.
Now, if Virgil unfroze time and Roman woke up and attacked, the scene that played out would probably play out again. However, there’s a smaller percentage that it would have been interested in Roman if he lashed out more violently. (Which with the state Virgil was in, I don’t see him doing that).
There is also the chance it saw Virgil as something weak and easy to control and just hopped on board and made things much worse much faster. Overall, Roman being there simply made things safer.
There was a deleted scene I had where Patton got involved for a bit but it felt pointless so I cut it completely. The creature itself was just trying to figure out where it was and what was going on. It was exploring a world full of people that it decided to take action. It was just curious at first. Once it realized how much power some people had, that’s when it grew interested. Prince Charging helped with that.
I hope I answered that well enough for you.
So, I have a headcanon in ALIP that the smoke shows people their worst nightmare in order to weaken them so it can possess them. Thoughts?
WARNING, THIS ASK IS VERY SPOILERY! Do not read if you haven’t read past chapter 14 of A Lesson in Practicality. Thank you.I used to have this post detailing my thoughts on the creature when I wrote it. I broke it down completely and explained why I did certain things. Even explained things I didn’t get the chance to. Someone even made a theme song for the creature! When I moved this to a main blog, I said I would re-write it if there was interest but there wasn’t much. Not many people had read ALiP at the time. BUT! To answer your question, it’s a bit like sensory overload. The creature was based on a thunderstorm. It was supposed to be loud and tingly and overwhelming. A headache while your legs felt like they fell asleep and your arms became jelly and everything was so loud. Like finding yourself fine one moment and in the middle of a typhoon another.
My part of the art trade with juice-monster‘s smoke creature “Nico”!
