The other anon did great in explaining the being careful online thing and interacting with others, but I would like to add something regarding fanfic itself.
It is a great way to find out things about yourself safely. From personal experience, jumping from story to story I've discovered a lot. And it was all in fanfic, so I was safe. Dipping toes into waters you're curious about is natural and healthy, but be mindful of the water. Remember, even the calmest bodies of water can drown you if you're in too deep and far away from shore. You got to be aware about yourself and recognize your own comfort zones, which can be difficult as a teenager. But it could also be good self practice to setting boundaries for yourself. Learn to curate your online experience. It won't be a shock that in fandom, it's easy to find discourse and drama and...it's not worth it. Like the Thing for what you like it for and have fun, but do what you need to do to be safe and comfortable about it.
Be sure to read tags, summaries, and author notes if they're available. Be aware of your mental state if any or all of these things are absent for whatever reason and really debate if the risk is worth it.
Back when I was a teen, fanfic for me WAS my sexual education and I learned some of the mechanics through fanfic. So some advice about that is to remind you that...not everything in the internet is accurate. Before you think about trying anything irl that you read in fanfic...a bit of research wouldn't go amiss. (Like you know how in yaoi mangas almost anything would be used as lube IF lube was even used? Or in period related pieces before actual anal lube was a thing and they would have oils and whatever. If you're gonna try butt stuff, do remember the lube but research what's safe to use. )
Most fanfic sites should have an age requirement when you join, but in the teen years...if you're thinking about it...reading about it isn't a sin. It isn't bad. It's just...about personal taste and what you like and can handle. And yes, responsibility of your internet safety falls more so on you and your parents/guardians, but as you're getting older the more you have to start making the choice yourself if it's what you want to consume.
This is goddamn amazing to read thank u nonnie
