So I share my birthday with Lafayette, but I don't know a whole lot about him, so I was just wondering what your favorite random Gilbert™ fact is?
Seeing as he is my most favorite historical figure of all time- I have very many. But I’ll keep it short- here is a list of some of my favorite Lafayette moments:
When he was a child, there was a “beast” that tormented the town that he was living in, in the country side. He since he was little always wanted the beautiful taste of liberty and as a little kiddo tore a gun off the wall and ran into the woods to go kill it. But, a hunter had already killed it and he was in dismay.
Lafayette disguising himself as a pregnant women in order to get passage onto a ship to take him to America against King Louis XVI’s wishes.
After getting shot at the Battle of Brandywine, Lafayette talked all night long with James Monroe in French who basically just talked about how much he loved Thomas Jefferson.
When Lafayette learned that the French had decided to ally with the United States- Lafayette burst into tears and starting hugging George Washington who just got really shocked.
At the execution of John Andre, Lafayette started crying and Washington comforted him.
When Washington learned of Benedict Arnold’s betrayal he burst into tears and Lafayette had to comfort him.
Lafayette got really sick during the winter from riding on horse back in the sleet and Washington stayed by his bedside as much as he could.
Lafayette’s father died in a battle by a canon ball shot from a general who was fighting on the British side in the American Revolution. Wanting to get revenge, Lafayette aimed several canons at the home in which that general was staying and demolished the place. It was devastating for him to learn that that general had already died of illness several months earlier.
Lafayette meeting Thomas Jefferson for the first time in the Virginia and there being this instantaneous click between the two of them. Both were very tall, and ginger and Lafayette was so amazed by Jefferson’s talents and how cultured he was.
Lafayette being forced to dance with Marie Antoinette but he was so tall and awkward that he stepped on her feet several times and everyone laughed at him.
Just- the entire last week that Washington and Lafayette ever saw one another. Don’t make me cry (make me die).
In 1789 while commanding the National Guard, he gazed up at a window to see Patsy Jefferson peering out of it. He stopped his troops and bowed his hat to her, winking at her before continuing on his way.
Lafayette was the last to die. Everyone he had ever truly loved as a friend besides his children and grandchildren all perished before him.
Lafayette visiting George Washington’s grave and just standing here, he told everyone to leave him be and he sat there for a long while and just meditated. He was then given a ring with a lock of George Washington’s hair in it.
Lafayette gathering soil from the earth of Bunker Hill and asking his son Georges to make sure that he sprinkled the American soil over his grave so that he is buried in France and America.
Lafayette was at a parade while visiting America and this was long after Alexander Hamilton had passed, but one of his sons walked up to him and Lafayette saw the resemblance immediately and even thought it was Hamilton himself and fainted.
Lafayette randomly picking up a six year old child and kissing his cheek. That boy was Walter Whitman.
Lafayette breaking his leg in his early seventies after slipping on some ice.
In Lafayette’s last moments, he kissed a locket he had around his neck baring Adrienne’s picture, name, last words and a lock of her hair before he passed away.

I hope you have a lovey day! You deserve it! 💕💕💕
Aww, thank you so much, and back at you! :D ♡
So seeing the last words of Lafayette made me realize that I don't even actually know how he died? (Which is weird bc j I used to read about him a lot?) also, how old was he?
January 3rd, 1834- Lafayette made his last appearance in the Chamber’s political arena. A month later, he insisted on attending the funeral of a fallen deputy; the cold February drizzle soaked his skin as he marched miles to the graveyard. He stood stoically in front of the grave for some time- even as shivers and tremors were racking his body. His son Georges rushed him home, where he collapsed. After three weeks he recovered enough to write letter and walk.
May 9th, 1834, a carriage carried him to Bois de Boulogne but a thunderstorm arrives and he was left drenched, trembling from the cold and nearly collapsed with fever and pain.
He slept most of the time, except for times when he would get up and read a newspaper. His condition failed to improve but Lafayette didn’t want to call consultants.
At four in the morning on May 20th, 1834- Lafayette awoke, grasped the locket that held a portrait of Adrienne de Lafayette (his wife who passed). He pressed it to his lips, closed his eyes and passed.
When the news reached America, the nation went into mourning for almost two months. President Andrew Jackson gave Lafayette the same military funeral that was given to John Adams. John Quincy Adams gave a eulogy at a session of congress.
The king of France, Louis-Philippe thought he was too much of a menace and banned all recognition of Lafayette’s passing. The Chamber of Deputies was forced to reduce recognition to one sentence, “The name of general Lafayette will forever be celebrated in our history as one of the principal founders of the constitutional monarchy, which he greeted, along with us, with acclamation and good wishes.”. Newspapers mocked the king.
More than three-thousand people attended his funeral. He was seventy-six at the time of his death.
I accidentally started an email to my psychology professor with "yikes okay so" and it had literally no punctuation and I sent it from my phone bc I'm Really Sick and didn't want to pull out my computer so for some reason I guess is was still in the frame of mind that I was texting and I'm crying
