It occurs to me that snakes are similar to badgers in that they will rack up debts. But of course not in the same way. Badgers keep track of balance sometimes - favors owed, favors given.
Snake debt is more like sleep debt (Sigh, my 1am brain is laughing at me) Snakes evaluate new people they meet and place them on preliminary tiers. If someone triggers a Snake's internal warnings, it can take a long time for that person to work their way into another tier and make up the debt of bad actions. Similarly it can take a lot for a close tier person to run out their "credit" of being in the top tier before they start to get pushed away
