Hohokam pot, Snaketown, Arizona, AD 700 - 900
This large pot was recovered by famed archaeologist Emil Haury from Snaketown, Arizona. Snaketown was the largest and most important settlement of the hohokam culture, which occupied what is now central, southern and eastern Arizona, as well as some bordering areas. The undulating and spiraling motifs with which it was decorated are similar to those used in Mesoamerica to refer to water. This and other similarities have suggested that the hohokam had an important interaction with Mesoamerican groups.
