Playthings “I promise” scene without music

@snchick12 replied to your ask post: I’ve listened t the audio and I feel the opposite that Christian was dazzled in the musical and more in love in movie, am I missing something? I want to see it in the musical but I’m clearly missing something, help me lol, I wish Christian and satine has some more scene together tho in the musical.
I think the visuals are pretty important in getting the full depth of the love story, for sure. I was in the cheap seats and with the combination of the music and the the visuals even from that far away, I felt the love between them really deeply? That was especially true in “Your Song” when there was this moment where Christian and Satine locked eyes, and everything kind of goes quiet for a minute, and you see them fall in love there, I think. That particular visual was really powerful. “Come What May” was also very powerful in that regard. The stage was very darkly lit in that song, and they were holding each other really close and sitting on the little settee thing, and that again, felt very tangible.
I think Satine falls in love with Christian here for a couple of reasons: one, his music, and I think they did a better job developing him as a talented writer in this version? And two, because he treats her like a person, rather than an idol or a “diamond” without thoughts and feelings of her own. There is a bit of her as his muse stuff going on, but that’s no different from a lot of other art based 19th century stories, in any case, and the thing about his love for her is that he’s drawn in by her charm and her bright personality (I think she has more of a personality in the musical than in the movie, much as I love the movie) but he stays to make her happy. Not many people have asked Satine personally what would make her happy, because she lives in a world where they’re trying to survive and she’s always doing things for other people, whereas Christian wants to do things for her happiness for its own sake, in the beginning before things get messed up. There was also a pretty powerful moment when Christian goes to the Duke’s house with the idea of I guess saving Satine even though he can’t really, but he walks in the door and tries to punch the Duke and he’s so drunk and broken up that he literally falls on the floor and misses, and Satine has to say she never loved him to save him and starts sobbing in this awful, heartbroke way right as Christian just silently leaves, and that whole bit was really, really powerful, but the visual really mattered.
I’m rambling, but I think the visuals are pretty key to watching the love story take shape. I get everyone might not feel the same! But seeing it definitely had a big impact on how I interpreted things.
snchick12 replied to your post “Bruh….Ben Brantley liked Moulin Rouge. ”
Is he a tough critic
yep he’s usually one of the harshest critics for the nyt so it’s surprising to see that he enjoyed moulin rouge. his only gimmick was that the book isn’t great but we all pretty much agree on that lol.

The way Jared and Jensen make Sam and Dean become like 4 year olds is like crazy good!
It’s amazing! The vulnerability and innocence they can portray while also clearly being the same person who is capable of such power and anger is stunning. It’s not like they act like someone else entirely and you’re thinking ‘wow that’s really not Dean, that’s just Jensen or someone else I’m seeing’, it’s never like that. It’s Dean and it’s Sam but they’re just so different. That takes talent.

@snchick12 replied to your text post: Kcrabb88 no that’s actually quite super helpful, I could def tell satine was a bit more feisty just in the way she talked, but this helped described the setting of these two characters! I appreciate you taking the time to type this all down for me! Thx!
Sure thing! I’m glad to talk about it, since I know a very limited amount of people have been able to see it in Boston, so I’m happy to answer questions people have about the show. :)
