III: characters adopt a pet

Presented with the three bundles of fluff, Verity is transformed into a very small child again, for all she’s pushing twelve and almost up to Douglas’s shoulders.

“They’re so cuuuuuuuute!” she gushes, making it last at least eleven syllables. She picks up the nearest puppy gently, under Snoopadoop’s watchful but accepting eye. “Which one is this?”

Arthur checks. “Razzmatazz. He’s very friendly.”

As if to prove the point, the puppy’s tiny pink tongue pops out to lick Verity on the nose. She squeals in delight.

“This one, Dad,” she says, decidedly, looking up at Douglas. “Please can we have him?”
