The Bard
Artist: Benjamin West (American, 1738–1820)
Date: 1778
Medium: Oil paint on oak
Collection: Tate Britain, London, United Kingdom
Description
Thomas Gray's poem ‘The Bard’, published in 1757, was based on the now-discredited tradition that Edward I ordered the massacre of the Welsh bards; Gray describes how the sole surviving bard stood on Snowdon and cursed king Edward before throwing himself into the Conway river beneath. It is one of the earliest literary treatments of passionate and heroic action in a wild natural setting which link the sublime with the Romantic movement. It inspired many artists, including Benjamin West, de Loutherbourg, Blake, Fuseli, Turner, and John Martin. Here, the bard holds a harp, associated with the bardic tradition and a symbol of Wales.
Mini-comic: Sans & Kris ☃️
(by Starbe)
Sans takes Kris to the store early in the morning because Kris really really wants chocolate. "so, you're wanting a chocolate bar?...at 6 in the morning? heh heh, i can get you one." Sans takes him there, but right before he attempts the front door, "oh- wait..."
"heh heh i forgot my keys.." He forgot his keys...??? Kris, fueled by the steely grips of chocolate hunger, strengthens an arm to the ground ready to respond to Sans with a cold snowball to the face.
...Sans noticing the abrupt escalation quickly mimics Kris. So, the sno'down begins. A few hours later, and the two are sufficiently covered in the cold, wet shell of the icy ground.
"Truce?" says Sans, now being exhausted from pummeling ice-spheres towards a child.
*Kris gives a look that agrees. * Noelle, who happened to be passing by on her way to school, stood with her mouth gaped open. It appeared there was a, sort of, massive circle with a battle radius extending out. Somehow, the two had perfectly cleared the entire street of snow + the sidewalk, the roof and part of the next-door neighbor's yard with a total area of almost exactly pi*r^2. Noelle would know this because she's a NERD. HAH.
anyways, have a good day, thank you (you) for reading this! ily
"Happy Snowdown, Mister Vitor." Noelle says, offering him a present.
Inside looks like an ember from his home, preserved in crystal.
"I also made a hot meal for you, like usual." She never did confirm what his living situation is like these days, now that he's working more regularly.
"Happy Snowdown my dear!" He takes the gifts and for a moment looks contemplative, a slight glint at his eye. He wipes a few tears away.
"It's beautiful, thank you. Do come in!" He opens the door to a small apartment of his own, the walls lined with bookshelves, both makeshift and built, stacked floor to ceiling with tomes of all kinds from the current realm's tax codes to sorcery manuals from his home. Even the couch appears to be stacks of crates with cushions thrown atop of them, books slotted in.
"Forgive the mess, I've been working on my own archives of a sort."
"Happy holidays Fen!" she chirps as she approaches his workshop carrying a basket with a freshly baked pie to celebrate the holidays.
"Oh, Nessa! You're here!", he pokes his head out, and then jumps off after a few seconds.
"Happy Snowdown!!!", he muses and greets her with a smile and a wave, carrying something as well.
A round object covered by cloth.
"In the spirit of this year's decision to make something practical and useful of my art for all my friends...
I made you a buckler!", he revealed the item to be a small, arm strap shield, decorated with runic engravings in a spiral.
"You simply strap it on your arm, and you can carry it on your belt without it getting in the way of your every day life."
...
"Also that pie smells delicious-"
