Ronnie Raymond in high school was the one who'd call Caitlin at 4am. 'Why are you calling me?' 'Oh Cait! good you awake. Wanna get waffles?'

A blaring sound jolts Caitlin from her peaceful slumber. Blearily, she squints at the red numbers by her bedside. 4:10AM. Cursing to herself, she fumbles around for the source of the noise. She nearly knocks over her lamp trying to get her phone.

She knows she should probably just hit ignore and fall back asleep but she had been in the middle of a really good dream and now she’s really annoyed and wants to give whoever woke her a piece of her mind.

“Who is this?” she growls into her phone irately. “Why are you calling me? Do you realize how late it is! What is wrong with you?”

“Oh, good, Cait, you’re awake,” a familiar voice says cheerfully. Caitlin is suddenly more awake and less cranky than she had been a few minutes ago.

“Ronnie?” she says, confused as to why her cute History project partner was calling her so late at night. Or was it early in the morning?

“That’s me,” he says and Caitlin can practically see his grin. It makes her own lips twitch into a small smile.

“Not that this isn’t pleasant,” she says slowly, painfully aware of how gravelly her voice sounds from just waking up. She clears her throat twice before continuing, “but why exactly are you calling me at four in the morning?”

“Wanna go get waffles?” he asks casually, like this is something he does all the time.

“Waffles,” she repeats, incredulous. “You woke me up to get waffles?”

“Sorry about that,” he says sincerely. Caitlin could kick herself for how rude she’s being, never mind the fact that he rudely woke her up first. She blames it on the sleepiness. “Couldn’t really sleep and wanted some company. It’s okay. You can go back to sleep now, Cait. Sorry for waking you.”

“No, no,” she says quickly. Her pulse quickens. She hopes she hasn’t ruined her chances. “I’m up for waffles.”

“You sure?” Ronnie asks. “You don’t have to.”

“I want to,” she assures him. And she does. “Where should I meet you?”

“I’ll pick you up,” he says.

“Cool,” she says, biting her lip. Is this a date?

“Cool,” he repeats. She can’t be too sure, but she thinks she can hear him grinning.

“I’m glad you like waffles,” Ronnie says as he spreads a generous amount of butter over his stack. “I’d have to seriously re-think our partnership if you were a pancake person.”

“You re-think our partnership every day,” she deadpans, rolling her eyes. But if her lips twitch in amusement, he doesn’t comment on it.

“That’s because you always like the wrong things,” he says teasingly. “What kind of person likes bananas to apples?”

“You only like apples when you dip them in peanut butter or caramel,” she protests.

“And you pronounce caramel all wrong,” he says. “It’s car-a-mel, not car-mel.”

“Excuse me, but who’s first in the class? That’s right. That’s me, not you,” she says.

He laughs. “Alright. Got me there,” he says good-naturedly. “Guess it’s a good thing we’re both waffle people. I’m not sure our partnership could survive if we weren’t.”

“Waffles are the superior choice,” Caitlin says, smiling as she drizzles maple syrup over her stack. “I like the little cells. Perfect for holding syrup.”

He grins widely at her. “You’re adorable.”

Her cheeks heat up and she ducks her head, hoping that he hadn’t noticed her blush. “Waffles are serious business.”

“Very serious,” he agrees before he digs into his waffles.

The conversation doesn’t halt just because they’re eating. Ronnie yammers on and on about everything and nothing, sometimes with food in his mouth. Caitlin wrinkles her nose and teases him about being disgusting, always swallowing down her food before she replies to him. The conversation flows easily; very easily despite Caitlin not really being a people person. By the time they’re finished eating, there’s a warmth that settles in Caitlin’s stomach and she’s sure it has nothing to do with the waffles.

“This was nice,” Caitlin says shyly, looking up at him underneath her lashes. “We should do this again.”

“You sure?” he teases. “You just about chewed my head off for waking you.”

“Sleep is important,” she protests, flushing but she can’t help but smile when she sees his grin. “But seriously, this was fun. I wouldn’t mind getting waffles with you again. Maybe at a more reasonable time though.”

“Every time is reasonable when it comes to waffles,” Ronnie says seriously.

Caitlin laughs. “I’ll remember that when it’s three in the morning and you’re busy cramming for English.”

“I look forward to your call,” he says, grin widening.

“Just you wait,” she warns him, her smiling stretching as well.

They stare at each other like that for what seems like hours, just smiling. Then:

“You have some syrup,” he says, gesturing to her face. Instead of waiting for her to get it, he reaches over, his thumb brushing against the corner of her mouth, and Caitlin’s breath catches at the touch.

“Oh,” she says, heart thrumming against her chest.

“Got it,” he says gutturally, looking at her, eyes dark.

“Is this a date?” Caitlin blurts out before she can stop herself. Her eyes widen and she chews on her bottom lip, nervous about his answer.

His lips press against hers in response. Her eyes flutter close and she presses herself closer to him. He tastes like syrup and Caitlin smiles into his lips.
