We’re almost there now, the penultimate chapter is here! This is a ridiculously short one, but believe me Chapter Ten is going to be much longer. I’m still writing it, so there’s going to be a bit of delay in posting. Hopefully it builds suspense ;)

The moment you rematerialized, everything in your arms fell to the ground.
“Dammit,” you looked around at the pile of tech, then gave up and ran towards the nearest house. “Tanya, Ayo!”
You threw the door open and sprinted through the rooms – everything was deserted.
“Lan? Trixie? Tanya?” You shouted, sprinting back out to the road. Hearing a distant sound, you spun – hand on your phaser. A moment later you’d let out a huge breath – it was Tanya, running towards you with Lan at her heels. You took off towards them, and the three of you collided in a hug.
“You came back,” Tanya sobbed, her hands balled into the back of your uniform.
“Of course,” you smiled, feeling tears prick at the corners of your eyes. “We promised, didn’t we? Where are the others?”
“After you left there was a cull,” Lan said, releasing the two of you as Tanya moved back, wiping her eyes. “There are only five of us now.”
“Five?” You gasped. “Who?”
“The two of us,” Tanya sniffed. “Lenore, Jaz, and Melody.”
“Ayo and Trixie-”
“Gone,” Lan cut in, her voice hard. “Who knows where they have them.”
You stood there for a few moments, stunned, until the mission’s urgency came back to you. “Well, we’re gonna get you five out for now,” you told them. “Lan, you gather the others, Tanya can help me set up the pattern enhancers.”
Leading Tanya over to the pile you’d dropped, you began pulling down the device’s legs, pressing buttons in a sequence until the whole stick glowed green. You handed two to Tanya. “Can you do these ones in a circle?”
Tanya nodded. “Ayo-”
“We won’t leave him,” you said, holding her gaze with yours. “I promise.”
After a moment, she nodded. Taking the two enhancers, she moved a few feet away. You turned back to your work, and as you pressed the last few buttons, waiting for the green lights, you let yourself take in the surroundings. As your eyes passed the outlying buildings you paused – something felt wrong.
The ground next to the generators was ajar.
“Tanya,” you called over, “can you get everyone into the center of the circle? When you’re ready, use this comm to send a signal to the Enterprise - just press the green button.” You placed a comm on top of the nearest enhancer for her.
“Aren’t you coming?”
“I’ll beam up after you,” you replied, now walking toward the generators. “Gotta make sure everything’s fine on this end.”
You’d reached the building now. Kneeling down, you felt the edges of the metal square, covered in soil and bits of sawdust. Pushing it to the side, you saw a short drop into a long, dark tunnel. Wires lined the edges, covered by solid glass, disappearing beneath the ground in the direction of the generators. You reached in and pressed your hand to the glass barrier- it had to be there to protect an occupant, which meant this passage led somewhere. Glancing back at the tiny group huddled in a circle, you knew what you had to do.
“Give the Captain a message from me,” you shouted. “Tell him I’m going after the others.”
