Upon re-reading, i'm noticing other characters that do, too, and what it actually means in-universe. (spoilers up to chapter 93)
As Lagrah says here, it's got a name and everything. The Clasp of Covenant. Now, I have no idea what that word is; a quick research describes covenant as an agreement, particularly one of legal measure like a contract or binding agreement. Also religious connections of God and Worshipers.
For Lagrah and Deanreldy, it's an agreement of friendship between the unknowing and the witches. A Very Important Political Bond, that if the clasp was refused, I'd imagine would have dire consequences, as this was performed in-front of the other unknowing rulers and so Lagrah was like 'you sneaky bitch' as Deanreldy was forcing his hand, blurring the separation between the magical and non-magical. Something the witches want to keep Very Separate Please And Thank You.
With Agott and Coco, it's a promise on looking after themselves and eachother, I think. It's a huuugggeeee difference to their first meeting, when Agott pushed Coco away (and honestly nearly got her killed with her 'your test begins tomorrow' stunt). Now, Agott is helping Coco shine and encouraging her to draw magic for herself and to not give up, and Coco encourages Agott to not be closed off and to embrace others, as well as her own interests. It's really adorable I love them. Agott's inner turmoil of not liking her own thoughts of hoping Coco fails so that she herself gets the spotlight is so realistic and amazing to see flourish. I doubt she's shown her animal spells to anyone beside perhaps Qifrey. She's seeing Coco as a witch, and in turn she's taking herself off of the pedestal she's placed herself on for so long. She cares about Coco's safety and wellbeing and MAN She's growing so muuchhhh. I need to analyse her more she's so everything to me at this point.
The Gays. The Doomed Yaoi. The Not Friends Or Lovers But A Secret Third Worse Thing. Olruggio doesn't even fully know what the promise is between them. Not fully. Qifrey is promising to keep living and keep growing and to live his life fully. Olruggio is promising to always be there by Qifrey's side no matter what. He doesn't even know WHY he made that promise OR HOW MUCH HE DOES FULFIL THAT PROMISE OVER AND OVER AND OVER GOD. They make me sick. An unbreakable deal to never leave eachother's side no matter the cost. And so far the costs have been so severe. Are You Kidding Me. AND IT HAPPENS WHEN OLRUGGIO ASKS QIFREY TO BE HONEST WITH WHATS BOTHERING HIM AND SAYS OUTRIGHT WHATEVER IT IS HE'LL HELP- BEGS QIFREY TO LET HIM HELP. A PROMISE THAT NO MATTER THE TRUTH HE WILL REMAIN BY QUFREY'S SIDE. AND QIFREY HAS PROBABLY BROKEN THAT PROMISE OF HONESTY A THOUSAND TIMES. SINCE THEY WERE KIDS. FOR ROUGHLY 15-20 YEARS (very rough guess). PLUS THE MIND ERASURE TOO. THE GUILT HE MUST FEEL EVERY TIME THEY CLASP HANDS. GOOODDDDDDD
And that's not even getting into the tassels. Olruggio swapped their tassels so Qifrey had a permanent reminder of their promise. Man it's not even Their Promise is it, it's Qifrey's Promise. To keep living. That Olruggio kinda forced upon Qifrey if we're being honest. AND OLRUGGIO DOESNT EVEN REMEMBERRRRRR. He still doesn't have an answer. All these years later of living together in the cottage they discovered as kids and fixed up, now with Qifrey raising 4 kids. He's stopped correcting the girls when they call Olruggio 'Master' too. What could he POSSIBLY think it is. I need to dissect this man's brain.
