It's some half-baked MLP/Adventure Time crossover pic I drew like a year and a half ago.  For some godforsaken reason, my friend Matt and I talked about what Derpy would look like if she were possessed by the Lich (?!), and the pic was the result. XD Just gimme a second here...

Yes, the guise of "art" can be used incorrectly and unjustly, but for the specific example of Gaga, whether it be misguided or her self-glorified sense of artistic being, the primary intention was aesthetic. The most shocking point is that people get so unsettled over an article of clothing. It shows how we allow tradition and materials dictate our feelings. I have no problem with Nicki Minaj wear a Pope outfit to the Grammys. It does not effect my beliefs if she expresses hers.

Cultural appropriation is cultural appropriation. Intent is irrelevant. This issue isn't just about an article of clothing, this is about histories of violence involving white folks dehumanizing POC by stealing their cultural objects, traditions, customs, and/or garments. When there are already cultural, social, or religious practices that have been established and passed down for generations by communities of color, white folks have absolutely no right to remove that practice from the people it belongs to, decide its original context no longer matters, and do whatever they want with it. That is racism--not art, not aesthetics. Consequential outrage could only be "shocking" to someone with considerable white privilege who has absolutely no idea what it means to have their culture stolen, destroyed, or devalued.

If you are white, then your beliefs are not likely to be affected by a Black woman making a political statement with a Pope costume. Folks with white skin are not going to be humiliated, put in danger, further stereotyped, or subjected to racist sexualization as a result. There are no racist stereotypes about the long line of Popes, no Pope has been systemically discriminated against or racially profiled for wearing a religious garment, and Popes (white men) have always had considerable social power. When white Catholics have a history of being oppressed, killed, raped, tortured, bombed, and otherwise disrespected to every extent by Black folks, then maybe they can think Nicki Minaj wearing a Pope costume is identical to Lady GaGa wearing a burqa. Until that happens, these things will never be the same.
