"I don't often get the chance to talk to someone like you."
He pauses for just a second after saying those words, like he was surprised he let himself say those words. His voice was low, measured, and honest, with something much softer threaded within the words, within the thread tied around them. The thread that that shortened each day, pulling them close and closer together.
His eyes held hers when he said those words, the look within them not at all analytical, like when he's giving a lecture. No. They were soft, something akin to admiration within them as he looked at her, as he said those words to her. But perhaps but really gave away that there was something deep and personal in his words, was the smile on his face. It was faint, but there. Tender and warm, the kind of smile he doesn't give just anyone. But the kind of smile he's been giving her as of late... and only her. Accompanied with that look of admiration and... something more in his eyes.
The room is quiet now, but he's certain he can hear his own heart thundering inside of his chest. The two of them are alone, sat in the student seats closest to the Professor's desk. Maria with her open chemistry textbook and notebook right next to it, her hand having stilled after saying those words. He didn't mean to make her stop, didn't mean to distract her, but after what started as him helping her with her chemistry work, turned into a different conversation entirely. They started talking about her, about him, about things not at all related to chemistry, but that... started to become the norm for them.
Several nights ago, after taking her home for the second time, he offered to help her with any chemistry work she might need assistance with, though he had complete faith in her that she'd catch on, that she'd learn quick, because she's proven over and over to him how smart she was. How clever, bright and sharp. How important her studies were to her, how seriously she took them, and so he knew she'd do just fine, but still, the offer was there. And not just an offer to help her, but... to be near to her. To spend time with her, to have the opportunity to know her more, which he knows she shouldn't want, he shouldn't allow, but he also knows that he's practically given up on that fight. Especially when it became apparent after their moments in the library that the interest, the attraction and the want to be close, to know each other, was not one sided. Even more so when she allowed him to see exactly where she lived, even inviting him inside, and that's where he had extended the invite for her to visit him after class, should she ever need assistance with anything chemistry related. But his invite was more than just that.
And it had become more than just that. It had become them talking, sharing their interests, finding similarities and god, she was incredible. Intelligent, deeply observant, genuinely kind, intellectually driven, soft but strong in her own way, and beautiful. So beautiful and not just in looks, but her heart. Her soul.
He couldn't remember the last time he enjoyed talking to someone so much. He couldn't remember the last time he felt so engaged in any conversation, or so excited for the next. Certainly not like this, with her.
And in that moment, he just... wanted her to know that. Wanted her to know how amazing she was, how special she was, and how much he enjoyed not just talking with her, but hearing her talk, listening to anything she wanted to say. Whether it was about one of her favorite books or films, a place she wanted to visit, or a memory she held close to her. It was also just about being near her, with her, and his words, conveyed that. Conveyed some of what he felt, without the actual words.
And after another beat of silence, with his eyes still on her and that smile still on his face...
"And I enjoy every moment of it."
