What Is Soapstone, Exactly?
Soapstone is a metamorphic rock composed primarily of talc, the same mineral found in baby powder. Talc typically makes up 50–80% of soapstone's composition, with the remainder being chlorite, pyroxenes, micas, and magnesite, depending on where it was quarried.
Porosity: The Villain in the Marble Story
The key to understanding stain resistance lies in porosity — the amount of open space within a stone's structure. Marble is a relatively porous material. On a microscopic level, it has tiny interconnected pores and fissures that act like miniature sponges.
The Acid Problem Marble Can't Escape
The acid dissolves a microscopic layer of the calcite crystals, leaving behind a dull, rough patch that catches light differently than the polished surface around it.
