It has been a month or two since you moved to Vancouver and you have been getting settled gradually, with the help of your handsome neighbour of course. Speaking of, you did end up going on that date with him. He, and his polar bear cub that no one else seems to notice, took you to a local restaurant, so you could see more of the city. You had lots of fun, talking and laughing the entire evening. Afterwards, he drove you home and you bid each other goodnight. Ever since then, you’d only been getting closer and hanging out more and more. Matthew is a shy but fun and kind person and you’re grateful for his companionship and help in settling into the new city. He’s been introducing you to more and more of Canadian culture, including things like Tim Hortons, maple taffy, and hockey of course. He even took you to a hockey game! The latter was lots of fun, although it was strange to see the usually quiet and passive Matthew suddenly hyped, shouting, and swearing when the opposing team scored. Over the course of your time together, you’ve learned a lot about each other. You tell him about your family, your friends, your hobbies, and your jobs. In turn, he tells you about the complicated relationship between him and his family, his struggle with being almost invisible to others, and the highs and lows of being part of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. You’d be lying if you said your feelings have been purely platonic. I mean, who wouldn’t fall for the kind, shy, and handsome next door neighbour? You’re pretty sure it’s reciprocated too! He did accept to go on what was essentially a dinner date with you, after all. However, you’ve never outright talked about it. There’s a certain tension between you, but you’re not entirely sure you’re not just imagining it. In any case, you’ve decided you can’t take the tension anymore and you are going to find out.
Last week, Matthew and you made plans to go out on a hike. Winter is over and the weather has been getting lighter, but not hot enough to make you feel like you’re melting as you walk. You’re not as experienced in hiking, especially in the local area, as Matthew is, but he assured you it would be a great time and he could lead you around the trail. You lean down, tying the laces to your hiking boots before you hear a knock at your door. A smile creeps onto your face as you approach your front door, feeling the energy from your excitement spread throughout your body. You grab the door handle and open the door to be faced with Matthew, his blond hair falling into his eyes, a bright smile on his face. He’s dressed in full hiking gear, a large backpack on his back, and his polar bear cub, whom you learned is named Kumajirou although Matthew seems to forget this often, hanging onto his leg. He adjusts his backpack slightly, “Are you ready to go?” he asks softly and you nod, grabbing your own backpack and slinging it onto your shoulder before exiting. You lock your door behind you before following Matthew to his car. All three of you pile into the car, your backpacks in the car’s boot, and Matthew drives you to the beginning of the trail. It won’t be an incredibly long one, only around 3 to 4 hours total, but it’s a scenic route, one with waterfalls and plenty of nice spots to rest. The ride itself is pleasant. You chat and laugh, listening intently as Matthew explains the trail and the snacks he brought, a pleasant smile on his face. Kumajirou starts fussing as Matthew pulls into the small parking lot, wanting to get out. You chuckle and open the door for the cub once you’re parked.
Kumajirou jumps out and Matthew steps out as well, slightly distressed by all the shenanigans of the bear. Once you’ve calmed down the cub, you take out your backpacks and secure them before heading out on the trail. You walk on beautiful paths, filled with burgeoning plants and flowers. Everything smells fresh, everything looks green and new, a new beginning for all of the flora. Somehow, Matthew seems to be able to point out every species, quietly and softly telling you small facts about them as you encounter them. Kumajirou jumps around happily, clinging onto Matthew once he got tired. You walk leisurely, enjoying the route. An amazed look paints your face as you walk the beaten path, your eyes shining as you look upon the trees that tower over you. You can still see the effect of winter on the landscape, patches of snow here, barely grown flowers there. In contrast, Matthew’s eyes are glued on you. He’s seen the area a million times, in every season and context imaginable, and although he could never grow tired of it, you are a much prettier sight for him. The way your eyes shine as you look around in wonder, he can’t get enough of it. He can feel his face heat up and go red when he sees how you look at him when he talks about the nature around you. He only hopes its not too noticeable, that would be too embarrassing. Flustered, he stumbles upon his words but you don’t seem to notice, thankfully for him.
As your eyes are fixed on Matthew, while he tries not to look at you directly, his eyes shifting and glancing at you nervously while he talks, you both look forward at the sound of hooves. A deer, a female, crosses the trail, trotting into the bushes on the opposite side of where she came. A larger deer with impressive antlers follows, but this one stops briefly to look at you before hopping away, slightly more panicked. Your breath catches in your throat, you’d never seen a deer from so close before. Matthew seems less shocked, but pleased instead, a soft smile on his face. He tells you about the species local to Canada, and you listen as you both start walking again. Your eyes are glued to him now. He seems so into what he’s saying, so passionate, you don’t look in front of you and don’t notice the root sticking out of the ground, right in front of you. Suddenly, you go tumbling down a small hill, feeling the branches and small rocks start to make small cuts into your skin. You hear Matthew yell behind you as you finally arrive at the bottom of the hill and splay out on the ground. You hear hurried footsteps before Matthew’s face appears in your field of vision, a worried and almost panicked look on his face, “Are you okay? Can you stand up? Does your head hurt?” he askes, his voice soft but clearly worried. He helps you up and you wince slightly, the gravel of the worn road and small branches have covered you in small shallow cuts, your knees are scrapped, and you are sure to develop some bruises the next day. Nevertheless, your head feels fine and nothing much more seems to hurt. You nod, giving the blond a reassuring smile, “I’m fine, just scrapped” you respond.
Matthew insists that you should rest and he helps you take a small shortcut to one of the resting places along the trail. It’s a small group of benches and tables, right next to a beautiful vibrant lake. You sit at one of the benches, once again amazed by the lake, from which fish jump out occasionally, disturbing the seemingly still water. Matthew ignores the scenery, focusing on fussing over you. He takes off his backpack, chastising you in a soft but firm voice slightly as he cleans up your cuts and scrapes, “From now on, you have to watch where you go” he huffs, cleaning you up with the alcohol and wipes from his first aid kit. You roll your eyes playfully, responding that you wouldn’t have taken your eyes of the road, were it not from him talking all the time. He gets a slight pout at that, raising the small tissue to wipe a cut on your cheek, leaning close and squinting to make sure he gets all the dirt out. You feel your face heat up, suddenly aware how close he is and how his gentle hands on you. You look at him, unable to speak as your mind suddenly reels, as you listen to Matthew go on with his lecture. Slowly, noticing your lack of quips, he stopped talking, his face getting redder as he slowed down. It sunk in that he was leaning really close, he could feel your breath on his face and his on yours.
You both stare at each other for a minute, Matthew’s arms seemingly stuck mid movement. The tension between you is palpable, as if you could reach out and grab it. It feels almost suffocating, as if you were drowning in his eyes, yet magnet was drawing you in deeper and deeper. You break the silence with a sudden comment, “You’re really close!” you remark awkwardly, your voice louder and squeakier than need be. Matthew jumps slightly, staggering back and nodding nervously, “Right, sorry sorry” he apologizes softly and quickly, starting to clean up your cuts again and suddenly you wonder why you even said anything. You shake your head, putting up your hands to back up your movement, “No! No, no I just- I panicked I’m-” you try to explain, stumbling upon your words. You didn’t want to scare him away, yet Matthew keeps saying it’s alright and not to worry because it was his fault. In a final, panicked attempt to reassure him and also shut him up, you grab his shirt and lean in quickly, kissing him awkwardly.
As you feel his soft lips against yours and his body freeze up, the realisation of what you have done suddenly sinks in. You quickly pull away with a gasp, putting a hand over your mouth and starting to ramble out panicked apologies and explanations as Matthew tries to reassure you it’s okay. It is now his turn to be worried he pushed you away and, equally frazzled, he leans in hesitantly before kissing you just as awkwardly. After a moment to think, you relax and the kiss becomes smoother, more natural. Matthew’s hand moves to your face, cupping your cheek before he pulls away, staying close to your face. And just like that, you are back to staring at each other silently, an impossible amount of tension in between you. After a bit, when the tensions gets too overwhelming, you look away and Matthew pulls away, his face bright red and his expression nervous. You stay silent for bit longer before Matthew’s soft, quiet voice sounds across the air, “…That was good” he notes, looking for your reaction. You look up, suddenly relieved that everything was alright. You nod, looking down, your face equally as red as the blond’s.
In a silent agreement, you both settle down to eat, and soon, conversation picks up as before. Once you’ve finished your lunches, you start to hike back. Behind the pretext of being careful, Matthew holds your hand the whole way back, something Kumajirou doesn’t hesitate to make fun of him for. The tension isn’t gone, but it’s lessened. The way back is relatively uneventful, although the breath taking landscape is a constant. Your mind races the whole time, constantly thinking back to the kiss earlier. Surely, this meant Matthew liked you back, right? What now? What would this mean for you guys? Once you get back in the car, you feel the fatigue hit you. With everything going on, you hadn’t really registered you’ve been walking for so long. Your legs feel well worked, the kind of tired after a long, satisfying exercise. You feel calm wash over you. You try not to nod off as Matthew drives back towards your homes. The ride is silent, a comfortable silence, with Kumajirou asleep and snoring softly on the back seat.
Once you make it home, Matthew pulls into his driveway. He gets out first, getting your backpack out and insisting on carrying it to your house for you, saying he would come back for his own and Kumajirou later. His voice sounds different, almost more caring than before. You both walk to your front door, and once you have opened it, he hands you your backpack. You both look at each other, silently at first before Matthew speaks up, a soft smile on his face, “This was nice. Hiking with you today” he says, before adding, “…Can we go out again? A date, this time. Officially.” his voice is nervous, almost shaky once he clarifies the nature of the outing. Your face heats up, you didn’t expect him to be so straightforward, before a smile comes onto your face. You nod, “Yeah. Yes, of course” he hums happily and nods, turning to leave before you signal for him to turn around again. Quickly, you place a kiss on his soft lips again, admiring his handsome and surprised expression afterwards, before chuckling and waving him goodbye, closing your door quickly and leaving him standing outside. Flustered, you sink to the floor, smiling widely to yourself.
It was definitely a good decision to move here.
