Week 6: Social Graphs

What are the implications of the integration of social Graph technology in Facebook and other sites for your own personal data? As a post to your blog, labelled ‘Week 6 Social Graph’, discuss these issues. Using readings from this week and other items you may have researched for yourself about ‘Social Graphs’, discuss the pros and cons of this kind of personal data interlinking.

The term social graph was first coined in 2007 by Facebook and essentially refers to the way that online data is linked (Rouse 2010). To gain a better understanding of this concept is to focus specifically on the website that revolutionised the term: Facebook. Their particular social graph is called the Open Graph. Facebook’s (2016) Graph API article easily defines the three components that social graphs consist of:

Nodes - basically "things"

Edges - the connections between those "things"

Fields - info about those "things"

As for the implications of such data linking, there are both positives and negatives. The positives are that these connections are made primarily to help users by connecting them to their interests (Sporny 2012). Often the social aspect of social media is forgotten. These graphs seek to connect users that share similar interests and relationships. Of course, there is an aspect of data tracking and linking that relates to advertising. This use of data could be perceived as both positive and negative. However, some users may view this as a privacy invasion. Often the user intentionally hides the information that is traced. When Facebook users like, comment or share an item, it’s unlikely that they are considering the wider ramifications of such an action. Online behaviour does not exist within a vacuum, though this concept is foreign to many users who still (somewhat naïvely) regard privacy highly. The reality of the situation is that all online actions are tracked and linked. Whilst many of the outcomes enhance the online user experience, the false sense of security succeeds in worrying some users. Overall, I view social graphs as a necessary element of contemporary social media.

Social graphs in social networks

A graph is a mathematical abstraction for modelling relationships between things. A graph is constructed from nodes (the things) and edges (the relationships). Th is mathematical tool that can model natural and artificial systems such as economy, deceases, power grids, etc. has been used by the anthropologists, sociologists and other humanities oriented academics. However, graph analysis and social network analysis are also valuable tools for studying the web and human behaviours of the web users.

Social network analysis may be applied in any web field where a graph may be constructed. From the appearance of social networking sites, users were forming graphs with their friends and this was the ideal source of fresh data to apply social network analysis. One of the most prominent issues in social networks is the formation or the identifi cation of a network of nodes based on real world knowledge (school friends, colleagues etc.) or web extracted knowledge (they are part of the same online community, they like the same movies, etc.).

Social graph expansion

Social network analysis applied in the web by utilising the interconnected Web 2.0 blogs and their comments. Backlinks of posts and the blogroll (list of other blogs) of each blog constructed a graph that could provide some information. Th is structure was diffi cult to update, error prone (copy paste links, write urls, etc.) and the users had to have a web page or blog of their own.

Social networking sites created the tool that made relations easier to track and build. Now every user that has an account in a SNS can “tag” information and propagate it to that network. “Likes”, “tweets”, “diggs”, etc. are one button actions that users perform while surfi ng the web in order to post a piece of information without leaving from the current web page.

Facebook Open Graph (http://developers.facebook.com/docs/opengraph) provides an interface for interconnecting web pages with the Facebook social graph. Th e most common practice is to add a “Like” button near a media object in a web page and let users share their “Likes”. When a user clicks the “Like” button outside the Face-book platform, a new connection is formed in the user’s profi le. Th is simple API has signifi cant impact on the generated content in the Facebook platform considering the 500 million active Facebook users that surf the web and collect “Likes”.

Searching Social Graphs

Last night I read a piece at Gizmodo about Facebook's new Graph Search feature,These People Are Now Sharing Horrible Things About Themselves Thanks to Facebook Search. It is disconcerting how little signals we put up on the Internet can be blown all out of proportion, say for example by people making decisions about who to hire or who to admit to a school. In the Gizmodo article "Likes sucking dicks" is an example they point to as of something most people probably don't want to broadcast to the whole world.

When I saw the image Gizmodo put up of Facebook profiles they discovered with that my first reaction was that I don't know the context people listed that activity; basically most of the time it was probably joking behavior. My second thought is that lots of people might list some dumb "Likes" on their Facebook profiles just to make it harder to take little glimpses of what we share too seriously. 

But then because I was thinking of something else entirely, I did a search for "A Special Kind of Rage" a 1971 book about the Black Panthers and Huey P. Newton's murder trial by Gilbert Moore. I was surprised to see that a 2006 blog post I did at Tribe.net in the results. 

Making sense of the little glimpses of us that appear online is not a simple problem.

My writing on that 2006 post is atrocious! And most of the links in the post are dead. I also didn't seem clear to link to the source for the photo of Gilbert Moore (here) although I did link to the page, but the link I copied is now dead.

My very bad writing about Gilbert Moore is probably of little use to anyone. When I wrote the post it was in the context of a series of posts relevant to ongoing discussions within the social network at tribe.net. I never expected more than a handful of people, who "knew" me in the way we know each other online to see the piece. It's bad writing, but not so inappropriate in the context in which it was written.

Despite being embarrassed by the piece, there was a paragraph in it which was very relevant to why I was searching for "A Special Rage" yesterday:

I haven't read the book, but something in that points to what I find so important about Gilbert Moore's "Rage." It has to do with the way the past is concieved. The story Moore was assigned to tell about the trial of Huey Newton in one way or another was through the lens of vindication. Surely his editors at "Life" were interested in the vindication of law and order. And maybe Moore had some impulse to write about Huey as a hero, or to vindicate the Panthers in some way or another. But--oh lord and I maybe so wrong about this--Moore found that romanticising the story in either direction was to get the story of the Black Panthers and the trial of Huey Newton wrong. He was too good a journalist for that. He couldn't produce the story for "Life" in the way the magazine needed it to be told. So he wrote a book where the essential tragedy could be told. 

Tumblr has a spell checker so I see evidence once again I don't spell well ;)

Anyhow, the reason I went searching was precisely because I was thinking of narrative structure; emplotment, putting a story within a narrative structure. And the reason why I've been thinking a lot recently about narrative structures has much to do with following ShrinkRants here on Tumblr.  ShrinkRants is an authority about narrative therapy and following the blog has greatly expanded my views on what narrative therapy is.

Reading and seeing posts on Tumblr and sending signals by way of that little heart-shaped button isn't exactly conversation, but it feels a little like conversation to me.

Some days ago I wrote a post in reaction to a post by another blogger I follow here on Tumblr Samsaran. That guy is prolific! One post doesn't really say much about all his posts. While my post might be read as in opposition to his post, really I was just trying to wrestle with the ideas. And my motivation for writing was as much a reminder to myself to wrestle another day with the ideas.

Facebook's Graph Search isn't the last word on this sort of search, but it's new and will probably cause all sorts of problems. Some of the problems are of the sort of "Likes sucking dicks" put up once as a joke and that you can't live down. But another sort of problem is understanding what sort of context to put the "sort-of-conversations" people share on sites like Tumblr. 

I'm not sure how even to begin to think about this latter sort of problem I'm vaguely pointing to.  I wonder what six or seven years down the road this very post showing up in search results could possibly mean then?

Groupon is paying upwards towards $3 per new e-mail subscriber with SEM. Facebook is acquiring new e-mail subscribers around viral tagging of content and contact importing at the cost of $0.

Social graphs enable notifications to be sent to user base--primarily through e-mail. Facebook has its own in-network notification engine (News Feed) but it's true viral growth is spawned through e-mail notifications.

E-mail notifications are the true currency on the web. Cost to acquire new e-mail contacts is high but Facebook has obviously built their business around acquiring them for as close to as $0 as possible. Now we're seeing they won't let anyone--including you--access them.

Social graph always has been about marketing. It is our generations gold.

Relationships Go Beyond Social Graphs

I started my career before LinkedIn and the internet as we know it today. Back then, business contacts and relationships were made face to face. Contact information exchanged with business cards. Meetings managed in the calendar your company gave out each year.

Looking back now, we've come a long way. But what hasn't changed is the respect and integrity that fuels relationships. If you fail on either, you'll think you have a relationship you can count on later, but the harsh reality will set in when you least expect it. 

I like to think I've done a pretty good job investing in my business relationships. A couple of examples soon after I graduated university:

A VP asked my opinion on a major capital investment. I was a bit surprised he wanted my opinion - I was the new kid on the block. I used it as an opportunity to invest in a relationship. Fast forward a few years and his advice when I was running my own company was invaluable. 

A sales manager in the same company thought I should shadow him for a few days. I was in a junior sales position and would be a great way to further my career. We were to spend a day at HQ which meant a 1-hour drive. Asked when we'd be leaving, thinking 6:30am or 7. Oh, I was wrong - 3:30am, his normal start time. Fast forward a few years and he was a big help in me securing a job that taught me a lot of what I know today on starting, and running a company. 

LinkedIn in great for managing your social graph, but the quality of your network is in the investment you make in building and maintaining those relationships. Trust me, it is a wise investment that will pay dividends at some point in time.
